PDP Berates Tinubu’s GCON Conferment on IPM

Published

on

Nigeria major opposition party the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday lambasted President Bola Tinubu for decorating the visiting Indian Prime Minister (IPM), Narendra Modi, with the Nigerian second highest national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.

Speaking with newsmen on Sunday, the Deputy National Youth Leader of the PDP, Timothy Osadolor, described the President’s action as misplaced priority.

But the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Nze Chidi Duru, kicked, arguing that the President didn’t do anything unprecedented.

The PDP’s criticism comes a few hours after Tinubu conferred Modi with the highest honour in the land during the Nigeria/India Bilateral meeting held at the Presidential, Abuja.

The President said the award was bestowed on the Indian Prime Minister as a show of appreciation for their partnership and bilateral relationship.

He said, “Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India. We work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries. You have been doing a good job historically. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.

“I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner,” Tinubu said.

On his part, Modi commiserated with Nigeria over the recent floods that ravaged several cities across the country, including Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Indian Prime Minister promised to support Nigeria with 20 tonnes of relief materials.

”We had a very productive discussion with President Tinubu. We talked about adding momentum to our strategic partnership. There is immense scope for ties to flourish even further in sectors like defence, energy, technology, trade, health, education and more,” Modi said.

However, the PDP expressed displeasure in Tinubu, wondering why he chose to gift the second highest national honour in the land on the basis of mere friendship.

The member of PDP National Working Committee emphasised that though the President has the right and prerogative to confer a national honour on anybody, there must be criteria to show why they deserve it.

“It is not something you dish out for the sake of friendship and all of that. I don’t know what the Indian Prime Minister has done to have warranted such an honour. But this is the second highest honour in the land. It is a misplacement of priorities.

“I would have thought that the President should have asked the Indian Prime Minister how the Indian economy has been able to move away from being the poverty capital of the world to being one of the fastest growing economies in the world now. The biggest tech moguls across the globe at the moment are all Indians.

“Just look at Microsoft, the Silicon Valley in America and startups. They are all being run and set up by Indians. I would have thought that Tinubu, in a bid to shore up the lacuna his cabinet lacks, would have been humble enough to ask the Prime Minister to offer him a clue as to how to help his government and Nigerians. Not dishing out unnecessary awards that the man doesn’t need other than for pictures and commentary,” he said.

The PDP chieftain took a further swipe at the current administration, saying it wouldn’t stop playing to the gallery with some of its alleged theatrics.

Osadolor also wondered if the President took the liberty of asking the visiting PM and his delegation the right questions on investments and how Nigeria can borrow a leaf from the Indians to move the country out of the woods.

He said, “Tinubu is not serious. He should leave out frivolities for bigger issues. Now that the Indian Prime Minister has taken it upon himself to visit Africa, yes, we have a significant and sizeable Indian community in Nigeria. But to what end can we maximize and leverage these businesses?

“Are we asking the right questions, seeking the right investments and pushing for the right policies? But the distraction from this administration is becoming one too many. I think President Tinubu should wake up from these media gimmicks and focus on the real issues.

“Nigerians are hungry and dying. The technologies the Indians are currently deploying globally will help a great deal to solve most of these basic challenges.”

However, the APC Deputy National Organising Secretary, Duru, raised concerns that the PDP was not playing its role as a responsible opposition.

He said, “I think the question to ask is, whether there is a precedent in this. Then the next question is if it is within the confines of the power of Mr President to confer such an award. If it is, is the process approved? Once all these questions are answered in the affirmative, it then becomes the discretion of Mr President to confer such honorary award on whom he pleases.

“Having said that, it is also important to underscore the fact that we will need to go beyond the politics of emotions to begin to address the issue. So, the PDP is more than welcome to continue to play the role of opposition, which is admirable.

“However, we like to see a situation whereby what they put on the table is, with respect, how we can make Nigeria a lot better and more improved that will address the issues facing us as a country. I am talking about things like how do we put food on the table, create a better environment for business to thrive and create a better level playing field. These are things that should worry any of us than to chase shadow.” He added.

CSN, SGF, Laity Charge Catholics to Apply CST to National Development

Published

on

By

…Participate in Politics, Governance

By Samson Adeyanju

Catholic leaders and government officials have urged the faithful to actively apply the principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST), in national development through participation in politics, governance, and public life.

The call was made during the flag off of the 2026 Laity Week celebrations organised by the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Abuja.

In his homily at the opening Mass, the Deputy Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Very Rev. Fr Augustine Okochi, said the theme of the celebration, “Application of Catholic Social Teaching in Contemporary Nigeria,” was both timely and prophetic given the country’s social and economic challenges.

He stressed that the mission of transforming society rests largely on the shoulders of the laity, who are called to bring the values of the Gospel into politics, governance, education, commerce, media and other sectors of national life.

“The real field of lay apostolate is the world itself,” Fr Okochi said, noting that offices where policies are made, markets where economic decisions are taken and public spaces where national issues are debated are all arenas of Christian mission.

According to him, Catholic Social Teaching provides a moral framework rooted in the dignity of the human person, the common good, solidarity, subsidiarity, care for the poor and respect for the dignity of work.

He added that faith must move beyond prayer and worship to inspire justice, peace and concrete action in society.

“Catholics are called to see politics as a noble service to the common good. Nigeria will change when Catholics embrace governance as part of their Christian vocation to transform society,” he said.

Also speaking, Nigeria’s Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinent Affairs Office of the SGF, Dr Ezeamama Chidiebere described Catholic Social Teaching as one of the most enduring moral frameworks for building a just and humane society.

Akume noted that the teachings of the Church emphasise the dignity of the human person, justice, solidarity and the common good, stressing that faith must find expression in the social, economic and political life of the nation.

“At a time when our nation faces economic pressures, social inequalities and challenges of justice and peace, the principles embodied in Catholic Social Teaching offer a powerful moral compass capable of guiding individuals and institutions,” he said.

He said the Catholic laity occupy a strategic position in nation building as professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, and public servants who carry the values of faith into the structures that shape national life.

The SGF therefore urged participants to use the Laity Week to reflect deeply and recommit themselves to promoting justice, unity and responsible citizenship.

Earlier in his welcome address, the National President of the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, Sir Ambrose Obioha, said the annual celebration provides an opportunity for lay Catholics to reflect on their mission both in the Church and in society.

He noted that the theme calls on Catholics to move beyond words and translate faith into action in addressing national challenges such as insecurity, poverty, injustice and governance concerns.

“Our vocation as laity extends far beyond the walls of our churches. We are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, ambassadors of peace, defenders of justice and agents of transformation,” he said.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr Sir Ambrose Ojiako, represented by Chief Sir Obiora Okonkwo, also urged Catholics not to shy away from politics but to participate actively in democratic processes in order to influence policies and improve the welfare of citizens.

He said the application of Catholic Social Teaching requires Catholics to take responsibility in public leadership and governance rather than leaving the political space to individuals who may not share sound moral values.

The speakers expressed hope that the week long celebration would deepen understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and inspire Catholics across the country to contribute more actively to building a just, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

Zamfara Governor Lawal Dumps PDP for APC, Cites Leadership Crisis

By Salihu Mohammed

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of intense political speculation.

In a statement released on Monday by Nuhu Salihu Anka, the Director General of Media and Communications, the Governor revealed that the move follows extensive deliberations with political elders, stakeholders, and supporters across the state.

Reasons for the Shift
The Governor attributed his exit from the PDP to several systemic issues within the main opposition party, including:

Internal Turmoil: Chronic leadership disputes and structural challenges at both national and state levels.

Governance Distractions: Concerns that the PDP’s ongoing crises were hindering his administration’s ability to deliver democratic dividends.

Strategic Alignment: The need for closer synergy with the Federal Government to bolster security and developmental initiatives in Zamfara.

Focus on Unity and Security
Governor Lawal emphasized that the decision was a “bold step” taken in the best interest of the state. He noted that while he appreciates the support he received during his time in the PDP, current political realities necessitate a platform that offers greater stability.

By joining the APC, Lawal intends to leverage federal cooperation to address Zamfara’s pressing security challenges and accelerate infrastructure growth. He urged citizens and political actors to remain calm and supportive as the state transitions into this new political chapter.

This defection marks a significant shift in the North-West political landscape, as Lawal becomes the latest high-profile opposition figure to join the ruling party ahead of future electoral cycles.

2027: Okai Urges Makinde, Mohammed to Dump PDP for ADC Amid Legal Crisis

Published

By

By Salihu Mohammed

Kogi-born political activist Usman Austin Okai has called on prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) immediately to safeguard their 2027 political ambitions.

The demand follows a March 9, 2026, Court of Appeal ruling that upheld a lower court’s decision to void the PDP’s disputed Ibadan convention. Okai warns that the party’s deepening legal woes have turned it into a “lost cause” that could jeopardize the eligibility of its future candidates.

High-Profile Targets for Defection
Okai specifically urged the following figures and groups to migrate to the ADC before the commencement of ward congresses:

Seyi Makinde: Governor of Oyo State.

Bala Mohammed: Governor of Bauchi State.

The Turaki Faction: A significant power bloc within the main opposition party.

The Legal Red Flags
The activist pointed out that the appellate court’s confirmation of the Federal High Court order signals a likely defeat at the Supreme Court. He argued that if the apex court eventually nullifies the convention after primaries have been conducted, every candidate produced by the PDP would face automatic disqualification.

A New Opposition Front
Describing the current PDP as an unintentional ally to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Okai positioned the ADC as the only viable platform for a formidable opposition.

He encouraged grassroots supporters and the Turaki faction to integrate into the ADC’s upcoming direct primaries, suggesting that a unified move to the party is the only way to build a credible challenge against the APC in the 2027 general elections.
