The Chief Magistrate Court 3 in Yola has discharged the Acting Registrar of the College for Legal Studies, Musa Chiroma, after he paid N1 million in damages for assaulting a female lecturer, Barr. Fadimatu Musa.

Chiroma was arraigned on May 13, 2024, for offenses including assault, criminal force, and voluntary causing of hurt, violating Sections 244 and 219 of the Penal Law 2018. He had allegedly beaten Fadimatu, an Assistant Chief Lecturer and Chairman of the Task Force Committee, for preventing a student from taking an examination due to unpaid fees.

In addition to the fine, Chiroma paid N80,000 in prosecution costs, submitted a written apology, and undertook not to victimize or assault Fadimatu again. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Uwani Danladi, considered these conditions before striking out the matter.

Representatives from the Nigeria Bar Association’s Women Forum attended the proceedings to ensure justice was served. The forum’s Head of Public Sector Committee, Mrs. Fatima Bello Raji Esq, and other members were present to support Fadimatu and witness the prosecution.

This outcome highlights the importance of accountability for those in positions of authority and underscores the need to protect educators from workplace violence.

The Supreme Court on Friday reaffirmed the death sentence of Maryam Sanda, daughter-in-law of a former PDP Chairman, for culpable homicide.

Sanda was sentenced to death by an Abuja high court on January 27, 2020, after being found guilty of stabbing her husband, Bilyamin Bello, to death at their Abuja residence in 2017.

Though she had spent about six years and eight months in Suleja Prison, President Bola Tinubu had reduced her sentence to 12 years on compassionate grounds, citing her good conduct, remorsefulness, and the best interest of her children.

In a split verdict of 4-1, the Supreme Court dismissed her appeal, ruling that the prosecution had proved her guilt beyond reasonable doubt and that the Court of Appeal’s affirmation of her sentence was unassailable.

Justice Moore Adumein, delivering the lead judgment, stated that it was improper for the President to grant pardon in a culpable homicide case while an appeal was pending.

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has dismissed reports linking him to terrorism financing, describing the allegations as false, malicious, and aimed at damaging his reputation.

In a statement on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Emefiele said the publication that listed him among alleged sponsors of terrorism was “completely fabricated” and not backed by any evidence.

He warned that such claims undermine the seriousness of Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

Emefiele stressed that he has never engaged in, been invited, or investigated for any terrorism-related activity, adding that he has no connection to the individual who made the allegations.

“There is absolutely no truth in these claims,” he said, accusing unnamed actors of peddling falsehoods for ulterior motives.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the report and called on media organisations to verify facts before publishing sensitive national security information.
