The Abia State Government has denied receiving any truckload of rice as palliative from the Federal Government. According to the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, there has been no communication or delivery of 20 trucks of rice to the state as part of any palliative measure.

Kanu dismissed as “fake news” reports that the Federal Government had distributed 50kg bags of rice to states for sale at the subsidized rate of N40,000. He emphasized that the state has not engaged in any such transactions and there has been no official communication from the Federal Government regarding this.

“We didn’t see any truck of rice from the Federal Government. And the issue of selling a 50kg bag of rice for N40,000 is fake news,” Kanu stated. He added that the state government does not act on rumors or speculations and would have been officially notified if such a palliative measure was in place.

When asked about the state’s plans to mitigate the economic hardship faced by Abia residents, Kanu responded that the government focuses on long-term solutions by empowering people with skills, alongside providing immediate palliative support.

Collapsed Container Truck Causes Severe Traffic on Abuja Airport Road

A collapsed container truck between the FHA Bridge and the ShopRite Pedestrian Bridge along the Lugbe-Airport Road in Abuja has caused a major gridlock on the busy route.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, forcing outbound vehicles heading towards the airport to divert to the opposite lane, worsening congestion on the expressway.

Federal Capital Territory Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Muta’a Chorrie, confirmed the incident, noting that FRSC officers were on-site, working to remove the container and alleviate the traffic jam. He clarified that the obstruction was caused by a fallen container, not a tanker, as some earlier reports had claimed.

“It was just a container that fell on the road. We are making efforts to remove the container and manage the traffic. So, it’s a container that fell on Airport Road today, not a tanker. I haven’t received the full details yet, but when I do, I’ll update you,” Chorrie said.

Engr. Mike Oluwagbemi, Program Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), has provided a comprehensive update on the ongoing developments in Nigeria’s CNG sector and underscored the pressing need for the country to transition away from petrol.

He made this known on Tuesday while appearing as a guest on interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.

He said as of today, Nigeria boasts 123 conversion workshops dedicated to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion. This significant number reflects the country’s growing commitment to adopting alternative energy sources amid the financial strain imposed by petrol subsidies and fluctuations in global oil markets.

Engr. Oluwagbemi highlighted the economic imperative of this transition, stating, “The nation is being bankrupted by petrol; we need to move to gas.” His remarks underscore the urgent need for Nigeria to shift towards more sustainable and economically viable energy solutions.

Over the past seven months, there has been an impressive $75 million investment in the CNG sector. Engr. Oluwagbemi emphasized that these investments are a testament to the sector’s potential and the government’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. “These are significant investments,” he noted, pointing to the growing interest and financial support for CNG initiatives.

The CNG program is not just a standalone project; it represents an interdisciplinary approach that involves various government ministries and agencies. Engr. Oluwagbemi explained that the initiative does not fall solely under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Instead, it requires a collaborative effort, drawing on expertise from multiple sectors to ensure its success. This approach reflects the complexity of transitioning to a new energy source and the need for coordinated efforts across different governmental departments.
