Police Arrest Suspected Cultist in Delta

A 55-year-old suspected cultist and gun runner, Ufuoma One, has been arrested in Jesse, Ethiope-West Local Government Area of Delta State by police operatives led by ASP Julius Robinson.

During the arrest on June 8, 2024, the police recovered a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle with a revolver-like magazine and thirteen rounds of 7.6mm ammunition from the suspect.

SP Bright Edafe, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest. “In addition to his involvement in a series of crimes in that area, he is also suspected to be a member of the Eiye confraternity,” Edafe stated, adding that “investigation is ongoing.”

Ufuoma One’s arrest is a significant breakthrough in the police’s efforts to combat cultism and illegal arms trafficking in the region. The suspect’s activities had reportedly terrorized the local community, contributing to a rise in violent crimes.

The police operation, which led to Ufuoma’s capture, was part of a broader initiative to clamp down on organized crime in Delta State. This initiative aims to disarm and dismantle cult groups that have been responsible for numerous criminal activities, including armed robbery, kidnappings, and violent confrontations with rival cults.

The locally fabricated AK-47 rifle found in Ufuoma’s possession is particularly concerning for law enforcement, highlighting the ongoing issue of illegal firearms manufacturing and distribution in Nigeria. The recovery of this weapon, along with the ammunition, underscores the potential threat posed by such individuals to public safety.

Community leaders in Jesse have expressed relief at the suspect’s arrest. Many residents have been living in fear due to the frequent clashes between rival cult groups. The arrest has sparked hope for a return to peace and stability in the area.

The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. SP Edafe emphasized the importance of community cooperation in the fight against crime. “We rely on the support of the public to provide information that can help us apprehend criminals and ensure the safety of our communities,” he said.

As investigations continue, the police are determined to identify and apprehend other members of the Eiye confraternity and associated criminal networks.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested 36 scavengers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of an ongoing crackdown on rising criminal activities.
Announcing the arrests on Wednesday, FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu said the operation followed the recent ban on scavenging and the temporary closure of Pantaker Markets to curb vandalism of public infrastructure and security threats linked to scavengers.
“These individuals, under the guise of collecting scrap, have been implicated in crimes such as vandalizing manhole covers, streetlights, armored cables, and bridge reinforcements,” Odumosu stated.
He warned that some scavengers carry weapons, rob commuters, and act as informants for criminal gangs.
Residents have also reported missing household items, including generators and car batteries, often traced back to scavengers.
The FCT Command has deployed personnel to enforce the ban, with offenders facing arrest.
“Scavenging is now prohibited both day and night, and Pantaker Markets will remain closed for two weeks,” Odumosu emphasized.
During recent operations, security personnel recovered weapons and narcotics, including daggers, jack knives, chisels, iron rods, 45 wraps of Indian hemp, and 10 bottles of codeine syrup.
Odumosu urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring that the NSCDC, in collaboration with other security agencies, will continue efforts to maintain law and order in Abuja.
