Enyimba Crowned Nigeria League Champions as Finidi Claims First Title
Enyimba International have won the Nigeria Premier Football League for a record-extending ninth time after a 1-1 draw with Rivers United in the final game of the Super Six in Lagos.
Ekene Awazie gave Enyimba the lead in the 39th minute, but Nyima Nwagua equalised for Rivers United three minutes into the second half.
Despite opportunities for both teams, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, meaning Enyimba emerged as champions for the first time since 2019.
For coach George Finidi, this is his first title with Enyimba, following a disappointing season last year.
Both teams were cautious in the first 20 minutes of the match, but then began to look for openings in the opposing defences.
Rivers United had a chance when Ebube Duru's cross towards Mark Gibson was saved, but Enyimba's Olorunleke Ojo prevented the resulting header.
Enyimba scored five minutes before the end of the first half when Pascal Eze's cross was cleared in Rivers United's box, and Awazie slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
However, Rivers United equalised in the 48th minute through Nwagua. Ojo was called into action several times, but he kept out Rivers United's attempts to take the lead.
Enyimba, Rivers United and Remo Stars all finished on nine points, only being separated by goal difference.
Enyimba won the title, a trophy and N100m, as well as a Champions League ticket.
Remo Stars finished second and will also play in the Champions League for the first time. Rivers United has been dethroned and will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.
