The Rivers State Police Command has uncovered a child trafficking syndicate operating in the state and successfully rescued a pregnant woman allegedly held against her will by the suspects.
The breakthrough came after operatives from the C4i Intelligence Unit acted on credible information and raided a hideout in Igwuruta community, located in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, said the pregnant victim was lured with promises of help and later detained by the syndicate, believed to be running an illegal baby trafficking operation.
Iringe-Koko stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate was involved in the illegal sale of newborns and had targeted young women from vulnerable backgrounds, often deceiving them with promises of shelter and support.
She added that one suspect was arrested during the operation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate who are currently on the run.
“The rescued woman is currently receiving medical attention and has been placed under protective custody. The Command is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure her safety and proper rehabilitation,” the statement read.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, commended the operatives for their swift action and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to eradicating child trafficking and all forms of human exploitation in the state.
He also urged members of the public to report suspicious activities around their communities and assist security agencies with useful information.
Investigation is ongoing as police continue to trace other victims and uncover the full network behind the illicit operation.
