The House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education is seeking clarification on the claims made by Professor Carol Arinze Umobi, the acting vice chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, regarding her involvement in initiatives carried out by her predecessors.
Recall that while the committee was in the university carrying out its oversight duties, it voiced its displeasure with some of the facts in the documents that were sent in and asked the acting vice chancellor to Abuja to provide further details.
However, the institution expressed sadness that misinformation about these projects attributed to the Acting Vice Chancellor was spread on social media in a press release sent by Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Information and Public Relations.
In order to address the matter, Ojukwu clarified that: “On Tuesday, August 13, 2025, the University was visited by the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education. Members of the University Management met with the Committee and engaged in discussions with them.
“The Committee received materials, some of which were deemed unsatisfactory by the Chairman, who made this known. Three other Committee members who voiced their displeasure with certain statistics in the supplied materials also repeated this position;
“As a result, the Committee called off its meeting and invited the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University and other relevant officials to the National Assembly for additional clarification and conversation.”
“It must be explicitly mentioned that these projects and data were ongoing projects started in 2023 and earlier,” Ojukwu continued. On July 22, 2024, the Governing Council chose Professor Carol Arinze Umobi, who is currently serving as acting vice chancellor. She hasn’t started any new projects and isn’t in a rush to start any because she only has six months left to serve before the Governing Council appoints a permanent Vice Chancellor.
“The current acting vice chancellor will accept the invitation of the Committee on Tertiary Education in the best interests of the University, even though the information and the projects for which she has been invited to the National Assembly were inherited from the previous administration.”
