Professor Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, has urged affluent individuals to contribute more to the education sector, emphasizing that government funding alone cannot meet all educational needs. His call came during a post-convocation reception held in Abuja over the weekend to honor businessman and philanthropist Sir Dr. Emeka Offor and his wife, Dr. Mrs. Adaora Vivian Offor.
During the event, Sir Emeka Offor announced substantial donations to support education initiatives at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He pledged N100 million to fund research at the University of Nigeria and N50 million to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with a focus on enhancing access to education for underprivileged students.
Expressing appreciation for the Offors’ generosity, Minister Mamman highlighted the critical role of such contributions in bolstering educational development. “The Ministry greatly appreciates and supports this kind of recognition because government cannot finance education alone,” he affirmed, urging universities to utilize the donations judiciously.
“These contributions have a significant impact on education, and our business leaders need to adopt this mindset of giving back to society, especially to the less privileged,” Mamman emphasized. He underscored the importance of transparent and accountable use of donated funds to ensure they are effectively channeled towards educational advancement.
Addressing broader concerns about education, Minister Mamman stressed the importance of safeguarding schools from violence and assaults, urging further support for initiatives like the Safe School Initiative.
Sir Emeka Offor echoed the minister’s sentiments, urging other wealthy individuals to support educational initiatives, particularly amid Nigeria’s economic challenges. “We must assist in alleviating the suffering of the masses because the government cannot do everything alone,” he asserted.
Dr. Adaora Offor expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of accountability and responsibility in using privilege to benefit society. “This award is a motivation for me, signifying the responsibility that comes with privilege,” she remarked.
The event attracted prominent figures including industry leaders, current and former federal and state lawmakers, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, and former Minister of Defense Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, underscoring the importance of private-public partnerships in advancing educational goals.
As Nigeria strives to enhance educational access and quality, partnerships between government, private sector, and philanthropic individuals like the Offors are pivotal in driving positive change and ensuring inclusive growth in the education sector.
