Over a hundred individuals were apprehended by the Delta State Police Command on Tuesday, following allegations of participating in a same-sex wedding ceremony within the state.
According to official statements, law enforcement operatives intervened as the suspects reportedly gathered for the event at a local hotel.
In an announcement shared on the state police command’s official social media account, it was revealed that the apprehended individuals would be presented for public viewing shortly.
“The Delta State Command has detained a significant number of individuals in connection with a same-sex wedding ceremony hosted at a hotel. We intend to provide a live broadcast on our Facebook page, showcasing the individuals in question,” stated the command.
It is worth noting that the anti-same-sex marriage bill, which was endorsed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014, imposes a prison sentence of 14 years for individuals found guilty of engaging in same-sex relationships.
Since the enactment of the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in 2014, numerous individuals suspected of belonging to the LGBTQ+ community have been arrested and publicly displayed by law enforcement agencies.
In a similar incident in December 2020, the Lagos State Police Command detained ten individuals on suspicion of engaging in homosexual activities at a brothel situated in the Okota region of the state.
Earlier in 2018, the state police paraded 57 men for allegedly participating in homosexual activities at the Kelly Ann hotel in Egbeda.
In January 2022, eight individuals were apprehended in a hotel in Isolo, Lagos, on allegations of engaging in same-sex activities.
