They Were Almost Home

Published

By Oyekunle Olalekan

That fragile moment when the body relaxes before the journey ends. When the mind moves ahead of the plane, stepping already into tomorrow. Below them, the land unfolded – wet, familiar, waiting. Port Harcourt breathed under the rain, unaware of how many stories were descending toward it.

They were aboard Sosoliso Airline Flight 1145, traveling from Abuja, descending toward Port Harcourt.
A routine journey. A trusted path.

Among them were students. Young voices carrying laughter from Abuja back to the places that shaped them. Schoolbags tucked beneath seats, futures folded carefully inside. The cabin filled with normal sounds. Seatbelts fastened. A familiar announcement.

But they were not alone.

There were parents too, travelling with quiet endurance. Strangers bound together briefly by chance and shared air. Lives intersecting for only a few hours, never knowing how closely their fates had aligned. Each seat held a history. Each name carried someone else’s heart.

The cabin was filled with normalcy. Seatbelts clicked. The familiar announcement was made. Almost there. No one prepares for loss while preparing to land.

Rain followed them in silence. It fell steadily, blurring sky and earth, erasing certainty. The city below dimmed, and in that narrowing space between cloud and ground, time faltered. What happened next came without permission, without mercy.

And then… impact.
And then… absence.

What remained was not only twisted metal, but waiting. Phones that rang into nothing. Families pacing airport floors long after arrival time had passed. Names repeated until they lost their shape.

They were students.
They were parents.
They were individuals whose lives did not deserve to end as headlines.

Twenty years have passed. Twenty years of birthdays uncelebrated. Of classrooms that never felt quite full again. Of parents who learned how to live with a silence that does not heal. Time moved forward, as it always does, but grief did not dissolve; it only changed shape.

A nation mourned not just what was lost, but what was unfinished, the futures that never unfolded, the questions that lingered about responsibility, about safety, about whether this loss could have been prevented.

Grief does not discriminate. It visits the young and the old alike. It settles into uniforms never worn again, into meals cooked for those who will never return.

They were almost home. That is what makes the loss unbearable. Not the distance, but the nearness. Not the journey, but the promise of arrival.

This is more than the story of a crash that happened twenty years ago. It is a reminder that every passenger matters, that safety is a responsibility, not a suggestion, that memory must outlive negligence.

They were almost home.

And now, two decades later, they live in remembrance.

RIP to the 107 lives lost that day.
Gone from sight, but never from memory.

CSN questions Nigeria’s secularism, charges Knights to Safeguard Christian presence

Published

By Samson Adeyanju

The Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev. Fr. Michael ‘Leke Banjo, has questioned Nigeria’s claim to secularism, noting that the Constitution contains explicit references to Sharia and Islam without a corresponding structural reference to Christianity.

The CSN Scribe raised concerns about what he described as the possibility of a long-term religious imbalance within Nigeria’s institutional structures.

Speaking during the Joint All Catholic Knights (JACKs), annual summit held at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja, Fr. Banjo pointed to complaints from some northern states where Christians reportedly face difficulties acquiring land to build churches or establishing chaplaincies in public institutions, while Muslim worship facilities are permitted.

Referencing a widely circulated write-up titled “The Islamization of Nigeria Is Not a Theory. It’s a Blueprint,” noted that while its conclusions may be debated, the deeper questions it raised about constitutional provisions, Sharia courts, educational policy, judicial interpretation and strategic public appointments deserved sober and factual examination.

Challenging Knights, the Canon Lawyer said the Church’s history shows that Catholic Knights emerged at moments when faith encountered political pressure, citing the example of the Knights Hospitaller, later known as the Knights of Malta, who defended Christian communities and protected pilgrims.

According to him, the major battleground in Nigeria today is institutional; in how laws are drafted, how policies are shaped, what is introduced into school curricula, and who occupies key public offices.

He urged Catholic Knights and Ladies to draw up a disciplined and realistic strategic plan to safeguard Christian presence in Nigeria and respond proactively to developments in legislation, education, public appointments, media narratives and public funding patterns.

He charged them to establish competent national and diocesan strategy units to monitor trends, analyse bills, track policy shifts, and develop position papers rather than reacting only through press statements.

“If Islamisation advances through structure, then your defence of the faith must also be structured,” he said.

Fr. Banjo urged the Knights to be strategic for 2027 and vigilant beyond, insisting that their power and influence must truly serve the common good.

Gov Sani Commissions Pambeguwa-Kahutu-Kauru Road, Ends 45 Years of Neglect

By Oso Abidemi

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has commissioned the Pambeguwa-Kahutu-Kauru road, describing the project as an end to 45 years of neglect of several communities in the area.

The governor on Tuesday inaugurated the 22-kilometre asphalt road, which includes a span bridge linking Kubau and Kauru Local Government Areas, improving connectivity and easing movement across the region.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sani said the journey from Pambeguwa to Kauru used to take about one hour when the project was flagged off on August 27, 2024, but now takes less than 12 minutes.

He noted that Kauru was among 12 local government areas in Kaduna State that had not benefited from any road project in the last 12 years, despite the strategic importance of the route.

According to him, previous administrations had made efforts to construct the road but left it uncompleted for years.

“When we broke ground for this road, we made a solemn commitment to the people. Today, we return not with excuses, but with a completed project,” Sani said, adding that his administration was guided by the principle that promises must be kept.

The governor also assured residents that township roads would be constructed in Kauru, while efforts would be made to address the nearly 20-year electricity blackout in the area, blamed on the absence of power infrastructure.

Sani said his administration has launched an infrastructure renewal programme across Kaduna State, revealing that 140 road projects covering over 1,335 kilometres are ongoing across the three senatorial zones.

He said the projects were selected based on equity and data to correct years of imbalance in access to infrastructure and economic opportunities.

The governor added that the newly completed road would reduce pressure on congested routes, cut transport costs and travel time, and improve safety for commuters.

He noted that students, farmers, traders and emergency services would benefit from better access to markets and essential services, adding that the road was routed through productive farming communities to strengthen agricultural value chains.
