Buhari’s Death Paralyzed Me, Says Lai Mohammed

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has revealed that he was physically paralysed for days after learning of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s death.

Recalling the shock, Mohammed said, “I was paralysed for days when I heard about the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. When I recovered, I decided to dedicate a whole chapter to him in my book.”

He described Buhari as a supportive leader who trusted his ministers, recalling that during his eight-year tenure, the president asked him for a personal favour only once, to deliver a paper on his behalf at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

Mohammed also rejected claims that Buhari was detached from national affairs, asserting that the former president was always informed and in charge, except during periods of illness. “To say he was disconnected is unfair,” he said.

He recounted one of his most challenging periods as minister during the EndSARS protests, when his family faced online and offline attacks.

“My wife and children were bullied. Their businesses were boycotted, and they were unhappy because they felt I brought all this upon them,” he said, noting that a family meeting led to his decision to resign.

He added that the choice was not financially motivated, revealing that his total monthly earnings as minister were N860,000.

Addressing accusations of frequent lying in defence of the government, Mohammed said, “You may not agree with my position, but it is difficult to fault my logic or my facts. Many accuse me simply because I was loyal to the president.”

He described Buhari as “a good leader, mentor, and friend” and explained that his book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, captures critical decisions, crises, and communication battles during Buhari’s tenure.

The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has described the prospect of the All Progressives Congress (APC) retaining power under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 as “scary to contemplate.”

Speaking on Thursday, Abdullahi criticised the APC-led government’s performance, citing persistent economic hardship and security challenges that, he said, have left many Nigerians dissatisfied.

He warned that extending the current administration beyond 2027 could worsen national difficulties and further strain governance and the daily lives of citizens.

Abdullahi’s remarks come amid growing political positioning by opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ADC urging voters to critically assess the ruling party’s record.

The APC has yet to respond to the comments, though it has previously defended its policies, insisting it is working to stabilise the economy and tackle insecurity.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), and its technical partner, PUMA, have unveiled a special gold-accented edition of the official match ball, ITRI, for Sunday’s TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 final in Morocco.

Hosts Morocco will face Senegal at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah, with kick-off scheduled for 8:00pm local time.

CAF said in a statement on Friday that the commemorative ball was designed to honour the two finalists. The ITRI ball, used throughout the tournament, draws inspiration from traditional Moroccan zellij designs, featuring star shapes, floral patterns and circular symmetry.

Built on PUMA’s Orbita 6 technology, CAF noted that the ball blends cultural heritage with innovation while meeting elite performance standards.

CAF and PUMA had earlier unveiled the ITRI ball as the official match ball for AFCON 2025.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has claimed that Nigerians are largely agreed that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government has failed to meet expectations and tackle the country’s major challenges.

In a statement on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, cited persistent economic hardship, worsening insecurity and rising living costs under President Bola Tinubu’s administration as evidence of what it described as poor governance.

The ADC said growing public dissatisfaction reflects frustration with the APC’s inability to deliver on its promises since coming to power.

The party urged the federal government to address the concerns of ordinary Nigerians and called on citizens to hold leaders accountable ahead of the 2027 general elections.
