Survivors of Monday’s attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State, have recounted the terrifying moments when armed bandits stormed the school around 3 a.m., killing Vice Principal Hassan Makuku and abducting 25 female students.
The assault, which lasted over an hour, has left the community in deep anguish as security agencies intensify search-and-rescue operations.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers moved from house to house before invading the students’ hostel.
The hostel matron, Hajiya Maryam Bello, said she narrowly escaped after the gunmen attempted to break down her door.
“I refused to open. I only prayed. God saved me,” she said.
Parents also relived the ordeal. One father, Abubakar, said his younger daughter survived by hiding, while her elder sister was taken.
The wife of the slain vice principal revealed that the attackers broke into their home, killed her husband, and forced her daughter to take them to the hostel.
On Tuesday, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, visited the community and ordered troops to launch an intelligence-led offensive, stressing that “success is not optional.”
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris also visited the school, convened an emergency security meeting in Zuru and vowed that “every humanly possible effort” would be deployed to rescue the girls.
The state government has denied claims that security operatives were withdrawn from Maga before the attack.
Troops, vigilantes, and hunters are currently combing the forests stretching across Kebbi and Zamfara.
In Abuja, the Senate condemned the abduction and called for stronger school protection systems.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the attack as “dastardly” and urged coordinated security action.
UNICEF, the Nigerian Bar Association and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also condemned the incident. UNICEF demanded the safe return of the girls, the NBA called it “a national shame,” and the First Lady assured that President Bola Tinubu had directed a full-scale rescue effort.
As search operations intensify, prayer sessions continue across Kebbi State, with distraught parents maintaining vigil at the school, hoping for positive news.
