The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, has been widely commended for his leadership in combating illegal mining and safeguarding national assets at the National Stakeholders and Civil Society Summit held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
Speaking on the theme “The Role of Community Leaders and Civil Society Organisations in Tackling Illegal Mining in Nigeria,” Audi, represented by the Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC), Attah John Onoja stressed that defeating illegal mining requires grassroots engagement, local intelligence, and community participation.
Onoja noted that under Audi’s leadership, the Corps has disrupted several illegal mining operations across states, secured mineral resources, boosted government revenue, and supported local economic growth.
He credited the Mining Marshals, established during Audi’s tenure, with spearheading intelligence-led interventions that have resulted in arrests, seizures, prosecutions, and the closure of illegal sites.
He added that the NSCDC has also strengthened synergy with other security agencies in tackling wider threats such as terrorism, oil theft, and banditry.
“The Corps under Prof. Audi is committed to professionalism, integrity, and collaboration in safeguarding the nation’s critical assets,” Onoja said.
The summit brought together government officials, security experts, and civil society leaders to examine the security and economic implications of illegal mining.
Delegates resolved that empowering agencies like the NSCDC, alongside stronger community and inter-agency cooperation, remains critical to Nigeria’s stability and development.
Since assuming office, Audi has introduced several reforms in the Corps, including the creation of the Mining Marshals and other specialised units.
His initiatives have drawn praise from lawmakers and stakeholders, with the House of Representatives earlier commending him for fostering a safer and more transparent mining environment.
Observers at the summit noted that Prof. Audi’s recognition reflects his growing reputation for repositioning the NSCDC as a key player in Nigeria’s security architecture and economic protection drive.
