The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has dismissed a 48-hour ultimatum reportedly issued by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, over the conferment of a chieftaincy title on Ibadan-based businessman, Chief Dotun Sanusi, describing it as “an empty threat from a dead empire.”
Oba Owoade had allegedly demanded the withdrawal of the title Okanlomo of Yorubaland bestowed on Sanusi, claiming the action undermined his authority and the traditional institution.
Reacting through his spokesman, Moses Olafare, the Ooni said he remained unshaken by the ultimatum, stressing that his focus was on initiatives that advance the Yoruba people.
“The Ooni is busy establishing businesses and creating jobs for youths across Yorubaland.
“Others are fighting over supremacy that does not exist. Dead empire,” Olafare stated in a social media post.
He further disclosed that the monarch was going ahead with plans for the groundbreaking of the Ojaja Smart City in Ibadan, which he described as set to be the largest in Africa, contrasting it with what he called “empty threats from traditional rivals.”
“Where does the Ooni have time for supremacy hullabaloo? Issuing a 48-hour ultimatum over a chieftaincy title that doesn’t even exist,” he added.
The exchange underscores long-standing but often understated tensions among leading Yoruba traditional rulers over historical influence and authority in the region.
