Nigerian singer Naira Marley has recounted his side of the story surrounding the death of his former artist, Mohbad, in a two-hour documentary released on Wednesday.
Marley said Mohbad’s journey with Marlian Music started with promise but later soured over financial disagreements.
He revealed that in June 2020, he discovered Mohbad was using a substance called “Ice” and advised him to stop due to its harmful effects.
Marley emphasized transparency in their business dealings, noting a 50-50 profit-sharing agreement, and presented evidence of Mohbad’s hospital visit in November 2020 to counter claims that the singer feared medical facilities.
He also addressed the February 24, 2022, NDLEA incident, when Mohbad was questioned following a scuffle with officers, after which Mohbad reportedly limited visits to Marlian House.
Marley said he supported Mohbad by covering medical costs.
On March 27, 2022, Mohbad attempted suicide, which Marley attributed to mental health struggles.
He also discussed Mohbad’s online search for a lethal insecticide with the singer and his parents.
The relationship worsened after Mohbad became intoxicated and clashed with his manager, later accusing Marley on Twitter of threatening his life.
In October 2022, Mohbad’s lawyer formally notified Marlian Music of his intent to leave the label, with Marley providing payment logs to demonstrate financial transparency.
Marley claimed Mohbad later withdrew $72,000 from a DSP partner, which he believed was not rightfully Mohbad’s.
He said he lost contact with Mohbad after October 4, 2022, the last time they met, and was in Amsterdam when Mohbad passed away.
Marley expressed confusion over allegations linking him to Mohbad’s death, stressing that those with Mohbad in his final hours have not been questioned.
