The Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA) on Monday, July 28, 2025, commenced its 12th Commission Meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing together top aviation safety officials from seven West African nations.
The three-day gathering is being held under the theme “Celebrating Our Collective Wins in Capacity Building and Aviation Safety in the BAG Region and Beyond,” underscoring the progress made in enhancing aviation safety across member states.
Speaking at the opening session, the Director General of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Capt. Alex Badeh Jnr., extended a warm welcome to delegates. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering regional cooperation in aviation safety and emphasized the critical importance of shared experiences and sustained capacity building in achieving international best practices.
Charles Irhueh, the outgoing BAGAIA Commissioner, reflected on the significant strides made by the agency over the past six years of his tenure. He proudly revealed that several member states, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Cape Verde, and Liberia, have successfully established independent accident investigation bureaus. He also noted that The Gambia and Guinea are expected to operationalize their respective bureaus by the end of the year, further strengthening regional capabilities.
The Banjul Accord Group (BAG) is a sub-regional bloc comprising seven West African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Cape Verde, and Guinea. Operating under the framework of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), BAGAIA’s shared mission is to promote safe and effective civil aviation practices across the region.
The Abuja meeting is anticipated to conclude with renewed commitments, the formulation of strategic plans, and collaborative actions aimed at continuously improving aviation safety and investigation capacity among all member states.
