Urban Farming Under Threat in Abuja as City Expands

In the heart of Abuja, beneath a noisy highway bridge, 42-year-old Bala Haruna tends to his family’s corn, cassava, and okra farmland, he says existed “long before” the hotels, mosques, and high-rises of Nigeria’s capital.

Although Abuja was designed as a carefully planned city, scattered farmlands like Haruna’s expose the gaps in that vision.

These green spaces, often tucked into low-lying areas and creek beds, have survived for decades amidst the concrete sprawl. But now, they are under increasing threat from property developers.

“Having a green space in a densely populated city like Abuja does a lot of good,” said 63-year-old retiree Malik Kuje Guni, who turned to farming to supplement his pension.

Despite rules meant to protect such areas, farmers claim developers are encroaching without valid documents. One group of farmers reportedly received just N300,000; now worth about $190 for land seized three years ago. Many of these plots fall within designated municipal green zones where construction and farming are officially prohibited, but enforcement remains weak.

Urban planning researcher Ismail Nuhu criticized the frequent abuse of the Abuja master plan. “Politicians use it to grab land, citing the master plan just to say, ‘Oh, this isn’t supposed to be here,’” he said, noting that even the presidential villa does not sit where the plan originally intended.

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to strictly enforce the 1970s-era Abuja master plan, including carrying out demolitions and providing compensation to those affected.

Yet for farmers like Haruna and 65-year-old Godwin Iwok, who left a security job more than two decades ago to farm, the future remains uncertain.

Iwok says developers have twice destroyed his crops without offering any compensation. Still, he remains hopeful for his children’s future.

“I wouldn’t want my children to stand under the sun as I did,” Iwok said.

Abuja Residents Praise FG as Food Prices Drop

Residents of Abuja have lauded the Federal Government’s intervention in the agricultural sector, saying the recent drop in food prices has eased pressure on households in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, a foodstuff vendor at Wuse Market, Mrs. Bunmi Akinpelu, said government measures had helped curb the rising cost of staples.

She noted that prices of key commodities such as rice, beans and yam flour had fallen significantly.

“A bag of rice that sold for about ₦76,000 a few months ago now goes for around ₦55,000,” Akinpelu said, adding that the reduction had brought relief to both traders and consumers.

Similarly, a civil servant, Mrs. Nwodo Chukwu, attributed the price drop to policies that boosted food supply.

According to her, increased availability had created a surplus, leading to lower prices. “Food costs have been a major burden. With this reduction, families can now afford more,” she said.

However, some residents urged caution. Mrs. Cynthia Chukwuma, a shopper at Lugbe Market, welcomed the development but called on the government to ensure price stability.

“We have seen prices fall before only to rise again. Sustainability is key,” she said.

A mechanised farmer, Mr. Kayode Iyiola, said the decline in prices was due to a mix of government intervention and seasonal factors. He added that federal support for farmers had played a crucial role in stabilising the market.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has launched a fertilizer subsidy program, offering 550 metric tonnes of assorted fertilizers at 50% subsidized rates to farmers across the six Area Councils.

Speaking at the launch in Garki, Wike said the initiative will boost food production, stabilize prices, and enhance food security.

He warned against diversion, stressing that inputs must be used strictly for farming.

The FCT also procured 3,500 knapsack sprayers and partnered with agencies including JICA, IITA, FAO, and the World Bank’s ACReSAL Project for farmer training and land reclamation.

Wike urged youths to embrace agriculture, noting Abuja’s vast arable land, and pledged continued support to make the FCT prosperous, secure, and food-sufficient.
