The Abia State House of Assembly has announced the passage of 37 bills within the first two years of the eighth Assembly, inaugurated in 2023.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, disclosed this during a press briefing in Umuahia on Tuesday, highlighting the legislative strides made under his leadership.
He said the Assembly has focused on enacting people-centered laws that promote institutional reform, participatory governance, and sustainable development.
Among the notable laws passed are the Abia State Appropriation Law, 2023, the Greater Aba Development Authority Law, 2024, the Abia State Pensions Reform Law, 2024, the Abia State Security Trust Fund Law, 2024, the Abia State Electricity Law, 2025, the Abia State Senior Citizens Law, 2025, and the Abia State Local Government Administration Law, 2025.
“We are committed to enacting legislation that responds to the needs of our people,” Emeruwa said. “In May, we had a historic moment when 18 bills were assented to in one day; a first in Abia’s legislative history, and possibly in Nigeria.”
He credited the Assembly’s achievements to the unity and cooperation among lawmakers, as well as a smooth working relationship with the executive.
“The governor has assented to all the bills passed, making them fully enforceable. I believe the issue in Nigeria is not the absence of laws but their implementation,” he stated.
Highlighting key legislative efforts, Emeruwa noted that the Abia State Electricity Law empowers the state to regulate and develop its own electricity market.
“This law positions Abia to attract investors who can establish independent power companies and stations, thereby driving industrialization,” he explained.
He also underscored the significance of the Senior Citizens Law, which guarantees monthly stipends, free healthcare, and other welfare benefits for Abia residents aged 60 and above.
“We’re one of the few states that have passed such a progressive law,” the Speaker said.
Emeruwa concluded by reiterating the Assembly’s dedication to oversight, representation, and making laws that truly serve the people of Abia State.
