A violent clash between local vigilantes, supported by military personnel, and armed assailants in the Dutsen Zaki area of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, has reportedly left several people dead and many others injured.
Local sources confirmed that at least 16 vigilantes sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Wase and a hospital in Bauchi State.
The clash occurred in Dutsen Zaki, a forested area surrounded by villages such as Zurak, Aduwa, Kinashe, and Odare in the volatile Bashar district.
The region has seen repeated attacks in recent months, prompting mass displacement.
This incident follows a recent joint security operation in Kadil Masudu village, also in Wase LGA, where five suspected bandits were neutralized.
According to Abdullahi Hussaini, a vigilante leader, the confrontation began on Saturday and escalated until Wednesday, when over 300 vigilantes stormed the bandits’ hideout.
He acknowledged heavy casualties on both sides but did not give exact figures.
“The attacks became unbearable. We had to act,” Hussaini said.
Shapi’i Sambo, a local youth leader, confirmed the deaths of four vigilantes, including a commanding officer.
Abdullahi Bin Umar, a resident, also corroborated the reports of violence and displacement in the area.
As of press time, Operation Safe Haven, the joint security task force operating in the region, had not issued an official statement.
Attempts to reach their spokesperson, Major Samson Zhakom, were unsuccessful.
The incident highlights the persistent security crisis in Plateau State, where armed violence and communal tensions continue to threaten rural communities.
