The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), has commenced the construction of a permanent, multi-purpose secretariat in Abuja, a major step toward strengthening sports administration and athlete development in the country.
According to NOC Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya, the facility is being built on a five-hectare site allocated by the Federal Government in the Aviation Village area of the Federal Capital Territory.
The groundbreaking ceremony, which marked the official unveiling of the project site, was conducted by the NOC leadership in collaboration with senior officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
Leading the delegation was NOC President, Habu Gumel, alongside members of the Committee’s Executive and Governing Boards.
Also in attendance were the Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olapade, whose presence underscored the project’s national significance.
Gumel explained that the secretariat will be a five-storey structure built in phases and designed not only to serve as the NOC’s administrative headquarters but also to house world-class training facilities for a variety of sports.
“This secretariat is envisioned to be more than just office space,” Gumel stated. “It will function as a central hub to enhance our operational effectiveness while offering modern training infrastructure to support Olympic-affiliated sports federations.”
The facility will include training grounds, seminar and workshop areas, and specialised spaces for athlete development.
The NOC says this comprehensive setup is aimed at improving sports performance, enhancing technical capacity, and positioning Nigerian athletes for greater success on the global stage.
Gumel further stressed that the project is a long-term investment in Nigeria’s sporting future, reaffirming the NOC’s commitment to nurturing elite athletes and professionals in the sports sector.
Once completed, the secretariat is expected to streamline Olympic-related operations and stand as a landmark of Nigeria’s dedication to sporting excellence.
