The Federal Government has announced plans to adopt Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), technology to power military and industrial vehicles in a move to modernise its defence fleet and promote clean energy.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, made this known during a visit to UROVESA, a Spanish manufacturer of military and industrial vehicles.

He led a high-level delegation to explore potential collaboration on CNG-powered solutions for Nigeria’s defence and industrial sectors.

Accompanying Tuggar were Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ekperikpe Ekpo, Presidential CNG Initiative representative Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Engr. Henry Oki, and Special Assistant for Gas Business and Investment to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas).

During discussions with UROVESA executives, Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing trade relationship with Spain, noting that the European nation imported Nigerian crude oil worth $3.64 billion in 2023.

He praised UROVESA’s expertise in producing armoured, tactical, and logistical vehicles, expressing Nigeria’s keen interest in CNG-powered models.

The minister also underscored the business-friendly reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for clean energy investments.

According to Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Alkasim AbdulKadir, the talks set the stage for a strategic partnership that could drive innovation and economic growth while advancing Nigeria’s transition to greener and more cost-effective energy solutions.

World “Brimming With Conflict, Inequality”, Guterres Warns

By Omoniyi David

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is “brimming with conflict, impunity, inequality and unpredictability” as global cooperation weakens at a critical moment.

Guterres issued the warning on Thursday while addressing the UN General Assembly on his priorities for 2026, his final year in office. He said the international system is under severe strain from wars, deepening divisions, climate breakdown and declining respect for international law.

The UN chief recalled assuming office in 2017 during a period of optimism for multilateralism following the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Outlining his focus for 2026, Guterres identified three key priorities: upholding the UN Charter, promoting peace among nations and with nature, and fostering unity amid growing global divisions.

He cautioned that widening geopolitical rifts and cuts to development and humanitarian funding are placing multilateral institutions under intense pressure.

“When we need cooperation most, we are least inclined to invest in it,” he said, adding that despite doubts about international cooperation, the UN would not abandon its mission.

By Samson Adeyanju

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to confront terrorism, criminality and all threats to the nation’s peace and democratic stability.

Oluyede gave the assurance on Wednesday while speaking at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner, noting that while the military remains resolute, safeguarding national heritage requires a collective effort.

He stressed the need for a whole-of-society approach to security, anchored on strong partnerships with local communities and effective collaboration with sister security agencies.

According to him, such cooperation is central to his military strategic philosophy for the Armed Forces.

The CDS said despite daunting challenges, Nigerian troops have continued to prevail, winning public trust and strengthening civil-military relations across the country.

“As we remember our fallen heroes, we are reminded that the foundation of our freedom was laid by their sacrifices and sustained by those who continue to defend the nation against great odds,” Oluyede said, paying tribute to officers and men who paid the supreme price in service to Nigeria.

He urged personnel to remain guided by honour, professionalism and selfless devotion, adding that the spirit of comradeship should continue to bind the Armed Forces as one family.

Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as more than a ceremonial event, calling it a reflection of Nigeria’s military heritage.

Musa said the occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate the courage, professionalism and resilience of serving personnel, while honouring fallen heroes whose sacrifices underpin the nation’s peace and security.
