The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) will launch a contactless passport renewal solution for Nigerians in Europe, with the United Kingdom serving as the coordinating center.

Set for February 7, 2025, the initiative will allow Nigerians abroad to renew their passports online, eliminating the need for physical visits to consulates.

Comptroller General of the NIS, Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, announced the development during a courtesy visit to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Abuja.

She emphasized that the initiative aims to simplify the renewal process, save time, and reduce travel costs. However, she clarified that the service is strictly for renewals and does not apply to fresh applicants or minors.

Eligible Nigerians can begin the renewal process up to one year before their passport’s expiration.

Nandap reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving services for Nigerians abroad, following directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

She also disclosed that Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo has approved a passport processing facility in New York to address backlog issues, with plans for additional passport front offices in the U.S. and beyond.

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa hailed the initiative as a major step in enhancing passport services, commending the NIS for its innovation.

She assured that NiDCOM would support and monitor the initiative to ensure its success.

The contactless renewal solution was successfully implemented in Canada, receiving positive feedback.

The upcoming European rollout marks another significant advancement in streamlining passport services for Nigerians in the diaspora.
