The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), has revealed that 105 individuals were rescued and four lives lost in multiple building collapses across Abuja in 2024.
Acting Director-General Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, identifying key affected areas, including the Prince and Princess Estate, Guzape, Garki 2, Kubwa, and Sabon Lugbe.
Mohammed highlighted FEMD’s response to various emergencies, including building collapses, fires, flooding, and earth tremors, adding that the department successfully saved an estimated 3,500 lives through its toll-free emergency hotline, 112.
“During 2024, we rescued 75 lives from floods, though one life was lost in Orozo, Abuja Municipal Area Council.
“Rescue efforts also included 105 individuals from building collapses and 1,230 from fire incidents, with no fatalities,” he said.
Other incidents included an attempted suicide on a telecommunications mast at Katampe Hill, which was averted, and an earth tremor affecting Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama Extension, leaving over 2,000 residents distressed. A report on the tremor has been submitted to the FCT Minister.
Addressing road safety, Mohammed said FEMD rescued 89 people from traffic accidents, with three fatalities recorded.
The department also launched the Ember month “Operation Eagle Eye” campaign with FRSC to promote safe driving practices.
Looking ahead, FEMD plans to leverage technology, including satellite imagery, to enhance disaster management and risk assessments in the FCT.
Mohammed assured stakeholders of improved communication and data storage solutions to better mitigate potential disasters.
