The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom State has suspended its planned strike following Governor Umo Eno’s approval of a new minimum wage agreement with organized labor.

Announcing the development in Uyo on Wednesday, NLC Akwa Ibom Chairman, Sunny James, stated that the state government has committed to implementing a new minimum wage of ₦80,000, effective November 1, 2024.

Additionally, retirees will receive a monthly pension increment of ₦32,000.

James explained, “The New Minimum Wage Agreement was signed on December 3, 2024, between the Government of Akwa Ibom State and Organized Labour.

Workers are assured that the ₦80,000 minimum wage, as approved by Governor Eno, will take effect. Since November salaries have already been paid, any arrears will be cleared by February 2025.

Salaries for December 2024 will reflect the new wage.”

The agreement also aligns with the provisions of a circular issued by the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission on September 27, ensuring that both active workers and retirees benefit from the adjustments.

The NLC commended Governor Eno for his swift action, which they believe demonstrates a commitment to workers’ welfare.

In return, the Congress urged employees to reciprocate by enhancing productivity and service delivery across the state.

With the wage dispute resolved, the indefinite strike originally scheduled for December 4, 2024, has been officially called off.

Workers have been directed to resume their duties immediately.
