The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested four suspects allegedly involved in the vandalism of streetlight poles across Abuja.
The suspects were apprehended during routine night patrols conducted by the command’s Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Tactical Team, further highlighting the agency’s resolve to protect public infrastructure in the FCT.
Parading the suspects on Friday, November 29, 2024, in Abuja, NSCDC FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu described the arrests as a significant step in curbing the menace of vandalism in the city.
The first arrest occurred at 1 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, near Eden Garden in the Utako area.
Two suspects, Japheth Adams, 21, from Zango Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State, and Friday Ojo, 51, from Ojo Local Government Area in Lagos State, were caught in the act of vandalizing a medium-sized streetlight pole.
The second operation followed at 2 a.m. on Thursday, November 28, near the Moshood Abiola Stadium at the National Hospital Junction.
Ibrahim Aliyu, 19, from Nasarawa Local Government Area in Kano State, and Hassan Abdullahi, 23, from Zaria Local Government Area in Kaduna State, were apprehended while dismantling two large streetlight poles.
Recovered items included one medium-sized streetlight pole and two large traffic light poles.
Commandant Odumosu assured the public that the suspects were under investigation and would be prosecuted to ensure justice is served.
He reiterated the NSCDC’s dedication to protecting critical infrastructure, warning vandals, scavengers, and criminal elements to desist from their activities or face severe consequences.
“Our operatives are on 24-hour surveillance and patrol across the metropolis and surrounding suburbs.
“The FCT is a no-go area for vandals, scavengers, and hoodlums who operate under the cover of darkness to destroy and steal public assets.
“My earlier pronouncement stands: repent, relocate, or face the wrath of the law,” Odumosu said.
The commandant urged Abuja residents to support the fight against vandalism by providing credible information, assuring the safety and confidentiality of informants.
This marks another victory for the NSCDC in its ongoing crackdown on vandals threatening public infrastructure in the FCT.
