The Executive Chairman of Mangu Local Government, Hon. Emmanuel Bala Mwolpun, has pledged that his administration will prioritize the empowerment of People with Disabilities (PWDs).
This commitment was made during a meeting with the Plateau State chapter of the PDP wing for PWDs, held in his office on Monday.
A statement issued by Jeremiah Dakahap, the Director of Press and Publicity for the Executive Chairman, noted that Mwolpun was represented at the meeting by his Deputy, Hon. Nuhu Yakwen.
During the session, Yakwen conveyed that plans are underway to ensure the inclusion of PWDs in all local government empowerment programs.
Mwolpun expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Governor Barr. Caleb Mutfwang’s administration in engaging individuals with disabilities and affirmed his intention to continue and expand these efforts.
He emphasized the belief that all individuals deserve equal treatment, stating that everyone is created in God’s image.
He also highlighted the importance of recognizing the potential within disabilities, stating his openness to utilizing the knowledge and skills of PWDs for community development.
Hon. Sam Godongs, Director General of Research and Documentation at Government House, and a member of the visiting delegation, reiterated that PWDs should not be seen as second-class citizens due to their qualifications and capabilities.
Earlier in the meeting, Hon. Gyang Yusuf Nyam, State Chairman of the PDP wing for PWDs, underscored the need for inclusive representation, as mandated by the Plateau State Disability Law of 2005 and the National Discrimination Against Persons with Disability Prohibition Act of 2018.
He called for equal rights for PWDs to participate in government decision-making processes.
Taddy Chollom, from the National Human Rights Commission, emphasized the commission’s role in fighting discrimination against PWDs.
He urged local government officials to address the requests of the disabled community, noting that Mangu local government has one of the highest populations of PWDs in the region.
Chollom reiterated that his appeal is part of a broader effort to promote and protect the human rights of vulnerable groups.
