Nigerian Goalkeeper Nwabali Loses Father

The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the passing of the father of Nigerian goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali.

According to reports, Nwabali’s father passed away, leaving the young goalkeeper and his family to grieve.

Nwabali, who has been making waves in the Nigerian football scene, has received an outpouring of support and condolences from his teammates, coaches, and fans.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), has also released a statement sympathising with Nwabali and his family during this difficult time.

“We are saddened to hear about the loss of Nwabali’s father. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult period,” said the NFF.

The football community is rallying around Nwabali, offering their support and condolences as he navigates this challenging time.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced yet, but it is expected that the football community will come together to pay their respects to the late patriarch.

Mendy Joins FC Zurich on Two-Year Deal

Former Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy has signed with Swiss club FC Zurich on a contract running until 2026.

The 30-year-old defender joins from French side Lorient, where he made 15 appearances before their relegation to Ligue 2.

His move follows a legal victory against Manchester City, which allowed him to recover withheld wages after his acquittal on rape charges.

FC Zurich, currently eighth in the Swiss Super League, secured Mendy’s services before the transfer window closes on February 17.

NFF Secures Home for Super Eagles Coach Chelle in Abuja

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is arranging permanent accommodation in Abuja for Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, as he prepares to settle in Nigeria.

Chelle, currently in Europe meeting key Super Eagles players ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, is expected back before the month’s end.

Upon his return, he will select his preferred residence, ensuring stability for his tenure.

Unlike previous foreign coaches Gernot Rohr and Jose Peseiro, who stayed in hotels, the NFF is prioritizing a permanent home for Chelle to enhance his commitment and effectiveness with the team.

Flying Eagles Begin Camp in Abuja for 2025 U-20 AFCON Preparations

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, under the guidance of head coach Aliyu Zubair, have commenced preparations for the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire.

The team resumed camp in Abuja, holding their first training session on Monday at the FIFA Goal Project, Package B, Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Training intensity increased on Tuesday, with both morning and afternoon sessions.

The back-to-back WAFU B U-20 champions, the Flying Eagles booked their place in the tournament through regional dominance and will aim to continue their impressive form on the continental stage.

The 2025 U-20 AFCON, slated for April 26 to May 18, will feature 12 teams, including Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, DR Congo, Congo, Kenya, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Egypt, and Morocco.

While CAF is yet to conduct the official tournament draw, the competition doubles as a qualifier for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, with the top four semi-finalists earning automatic berths at the global event.

Defending champions Senegal will also be among the contenders in Côte d’Ivoire as they seek to retain their title.

The Flying Eagles will continue their build-up in Abuja as they fine-tune strategies ahead of the continental showpiece.
