The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their cooperation in combating drug abuse, trafficking, and counterfeit products in Nigeria.
The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at the NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja.
Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman of NDLEA, emphasized that the partnership is vital for enhancing public health and safety.
He explained that while the NDLEA focuses on tackling illegal drug production and distribution, NAFDAC ensures the safety of food, drugs, and other consumables.
The MoU aims to improve the sharing of intelligence, resources, and expertise between the two agencies, enabling them to address the interconnected issues of drug abuse and counterfeit products more effectively.
Marwa stressed that the collaboration seeks to create safer communities by reducing the prevalence of drug abuse and ensuring consumers have access to safe products.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General of NAFDAC, echoed Marwa’s remarks on the importance of the partnership.
She noted that substance abuse affects everyone indirectly through family and friends and highlighted the broader societal issues, such as violence and health problems, associated with illicit drugs.
Adeyeye emphasized that it is crucial for the agencies to work together rather than in isolation.
Both leaders called for enthusiasm in embracing the partnership and maintaining open communication to enhance their collective efforts in addressing Nigeria’s drug-related challenges.
