EFCC Will Arrest me Next Week – Obaseki

Published

on

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has indicated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intends to arrest him once his term ends on November 14.

Speaking at the EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session on Thursday in Abuja, Obaseki claimed that he had received information concerning the EFCC’s plans to arrest and jail him for alleged fraud.

He, on the other hand, stated that he is not frightened of being arrested or having his administration investigated, as he blamed the petitions filed against him on vendettas.

Obaseki stated that he would use his time in EFCC’s custody to undertake study, emphasizing that he has nothing to conceal.

He said, “I hear that the EFCC will pick me up next week after my tenure. Wherever they keep me, I’ll spend time doing research.

“There are many things we have done that can be described as legacy projects. I believe in Edo State. One of the enduring achievements is our focus on the Edo people and issues that matter to them, implementing necessary reforms.

“Why should I be afraid? I just focused on what I believe in, and today, you can see what has been accomplished. What happens after that is beyond my control. They can continue with their political witch-hunt and do all they can, to harm me. That’s their problem.

“I’m not afraid; I’m not worried. They’ve written all sorts of unfounded petitions against me, and that’s part of the challenge. In fact, I can even turn myself in if they call me – I have nothing to hide.”

The governor accused his opponents of being envious of his accomplishments during the last eight years, emphasizing that he has left a legacy in the South-South state.

“You know how this country is. It’s filled with bitterness, vendettas, and wickedness. Those who have opposed me in Edo State are cruel, very wicked, and filled with jealousy and envy because they cannot match the accomplishments we’ve made in the past eight years.

“But what’s important is to focus on the people to improve Nigeria, as the suffering is excessive. We are privileged to make a difference, so let’s focus on issues, not vendettas.

“Reforming the bureaucracy is a priority. We focused on the people and the civil servants,” he added

It was announced that the Independent National Electoral Commission has pronounced Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress candidate, the winner of the Edo governorship election on September 21, 2024.

Okpebholo received 291,667 votes, surpassing his closest competitor, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who received 247,274 votes, with Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata trailing with 22,763 votes.

The Southern Youth Movement (SYM), has called on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to run for Lagos State Governor in the 2027 elections.
The appeal was made on January 24, 2025, in a statement by the group’s National President, High Chief Promise Lawuru.
SYM highlighted Seyi Tinubu’s qualifications, emphasizing his deep connection to Lagos and his ability to meet constitutional requirements.
The group vowed to mobilize support across southern Nigeria, advocating for increased youth participation in governance.
“Seyi Tinubu is qualified to be governor in all ramifications,” the statement read.
The group dismissed age as a barrier, praising Seyi’s digital expertise and potential to address Lagos’ contemporary challenges.
They urged Lagosians to assess Seyi’s capabilities independently of his family ties, noting his contributions to youth inclusion in governance, including appointments of young leaders in key national positions.
SYM reaffirmed their mission to support capable youth leaders across southern Nigeria while collaborating with elder statesmen for mentorship.
“Youths with capable hands shall take center stage in governance come 2027 and beyond,” they declared.

NASS Summons Ministers Over FG’s Commitment to Economic Diversification

By Ade Iyamoye

The National Assembly has summoned the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, and the Director-General of the Budget Office, Tanimu Yakubu, to address concerns over the Federal Government’s efforts to diversify the economy from its reliance on crude oil revenues.

The Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committees on Solid Minerals expressed dissatisfaction with the meager N9 billion allocated to the Ministry of Solid Minerals in the 2025 budget, despite earlier promises of substantial funding.

Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, while defending his ministry’s budget on Monday, described his struggle to secure better funding.

He revealed that initial budgetary provisions for the ministry stood at a paltry N5 billion, which was only marginally increased to N9 billion after intense lobbying.

Responding to lawmakers’ queries on why his close ties to President Bola Tinubu had not translated into better funding for the sector, Alake maintained that the president was committed to economic diversification, citing the inclusion of the sector in Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

However, he declined to divulge details of his discussions with the president.

Joint committee co-chairs Senator Ekong Samson and Honourable Gaza Jonathan criticized the budget allocation, highlighting its inadequacy to support solid minerals development, a critical pillar for economic diversification.

Samson emphasized the need for strategic investment in the sector, comparing Nigeria’s situation with other economies where solid minerals play a vital role.

The committees deferred the ministry’s budget defense until the summoned officials provide further explanations today.
