The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has been awarded a N200 million Senate Research Grant (SRG) spanning 2023 to 2024, enhancing the university’s research and teaching infrastructure. This significant funding boost was announced by Vice Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole during the institution’s 39th Convocation Ceremony.
In his address, titled “No Longer Where We Are”, Egbewole proudly highlighted that Unilorin has achieved an impressive 20 patents, the highest among Nigerian universities, a fact confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. He emphasized the institution’s dedication to research excellence, further supported by an additional N50 million Special Intervention grant under the SRG.
Professor Egbewole outlined incentives designed to boost research output, including compensation schemes for researchers publishing in high-impact journals and the introduction of prestigious awards such as the Researcher of the Year Award, Best Faculty of the Year Award, and the Quality Assurance Award.
Unilorin’s commitment to enhancing both research and faculty welfare was further underscored by measures such as a 25% rebate on school fees for staff members’ biological children and scholarships for top-performing students. The university, which boasts full accreditation for all 103 programs, continues to uphold its reputation for academic excellence.
At the convocation, Unilorin will confer degrees upon 12,042 undergraduate and 1,875 postgraduate students, with 256 students graduating with First Class honours.
This financial support is poised to strengthen Unilorin’s position as a leader in Nigerian higher education, advancing both research and educational standards across the board.
