Football fans and stakeholders across Benue State are celebrating the highly anticipated return of the Governor’s Cup after an eight-year hiatus, with a substantial prize pool of N20 million at stake. The tournament’s revival has sparked excitement among local communities, as it offers a significant platform for showcasing and nurturing young football talent.
At a press conference held to announce the tournament’s comeback, Rt. Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, Benue State’s Commissioner for Youth, Sports Development, and Creativity, expressed the administration’s commitment to promoting sports and empowering the youth. Speaking through the ministry’s permanent secretary, Mr. John Akume, Ikyange highlighted Governor Hyacinth Alia’s dedication to human capital development and his vision for youth empowerment through sports.
“The Benue State administration, brilliantly headed by Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, is tremendously devoted to human capital development and has consistently maintained that he will stop at nothing in ensuring that the people of the state, especially youth, are well empowered,” Ikyange said. “And the best form of empowerment is talent discovery and exposure. This is the major reason he has graciously approved the return of the Governor’s Cup.”
Ikyange further commended the leadership of the Benue State Football Association (BSFA), particularly its Chairman, Chief Barr. Paul Edeh, for his proactive approach and dedication to football development in the state. “We currently have a BSFA Chairman who is standing very tall and is results-oriented. The development of football in our state is witnessing an accelerated pace under his leadership,” he noted.
The Governor’s Cup was once a symbol of Benue’s prominence in grassroots football and talent development. The competition had played a pivotal role in discovering football talents from the state, many of whom made their mark at both national and international levels. The commissioner urged the football association and media to support the state government in revitalizing the sport and continuing the legacy of football excellence.
Chief Barrister Paul Edeh, Chairman of the Benue State Football Association, emphasized the symbolic importance of the tournament’s return, describing it as a watershed moment in Benue’s sporting history. “Its revival symbolizes a renewed commitment to the development of grassroots football, which serves as a crucial platform for nurturing young talent and uniting our communities through the beautiful game,” Edeh said.
He further expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for his unwavering commitment to sports development, stating that the Governor’s vision extends beyond the tournament to a broader agenda of community engagement, youth empowerment, and societal growth through sports. “The Governor’s Cup is a testament to the passion and belief of His Excellency in the power of sports to inspire and transform lives,” Edeh added.
The tournament has already garnered attention at the national level, with the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, confirming his attendance at both the opening and closing ceremonies. Alhaji Gusau has also pledged to donate the Governor’s Cup trophy, which he will personally present to Governor Alia.
This year’s edition of the Governor’s Cup will feature teams from all 23 local government areas in Benue State, each fielding a squad to compete for the top prize. According to Edeh, the registration fee for each team has been set at ₦500,000, ensuring widespread participation. The tournament will officially commence on October 1, 2024, with the Zonal Conference matches, leading to the Super 10 phase, where the best teams will vie for the coveted title.
The prize breakdown for the competition includes ₦10 million for the champion, ₦6 million for the first runner-up, and ₦4 million for the second runner-up. Additionally, various consolation prizes will be awarded to recognize outstanding individual and team performances throughout the tournament.
Beyond the financial rewards, Edeh highlighted the broader benefits of the Governor’s Cup for Benue communities. “This tournament will foster peace and unity among our communities, bringing people together from all corners of the state in the spirit of healthy competition. It will serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing young football talents, many of whom may go on to represent our state and country on bigger stages,” he explained.
