In a tightly contested match at the Amahoro Stadium, Rwanda and Nigeria played out a 0-0 draw on Tuesday afternoon in their Group D encounter of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Both sides had opportunities to break the deadlock, but solid defending and missed chances resulted in a stalemate.
The opening stages of the game were evenly balanced, with both teams enjoying spells of possession and creating a few early chances. Rwanda’s defense, however, proved resolute, while Nigeria began to assert more dominance as the match progressed. By the 20th minute, the Super Eagles controlled the ball, forcing the hosts to retreat into their own half.
Nigeria came closest to scoring just before halftime when Victor Boniface, one of the Super Eagles’ standout performers, struck the crossbar with a powerful shot from inside the box. The ball rebounded to Ademola Lookman, but his header lacked the force needed to trouble Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, who cleared it comfortably.
Rwanda emerged with renewed energy in the second half, controlling the game for the first 10 minutes as they attempted to break down Nigeria’s defense. However, the Nigerian backline, marshaled by defenders William Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi, held firm, preventing the home side from getting clear shots on target.
The introduction of Victor Osimhen at the start of the second half gave Nigeria a much-needed boost. His presence immediately created problems for the Rwandan defense, as Nigeria’s attack grew more confident and cohesive. Osimhen, along with Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze, pressed the Rwandan backline, forcing the hosts to sit deeper.
Midway through the second half, Ademola Lookman found himself in another promising position inside the box, firing a well-timed half-volley that required a superb reaction save from Fiacre Ntwari. It was one of the closest chances for Nigeria in the latter stages of the game.
As the match neared its conclusion, Nigeria increased their pressure, piling on a series of late attacks in search of a winner. The Super Eagles dominated possession in the final moments, but Rwanda’s defense stood strong, repelling wave after wave of Nigerian assaults. With aggressive tackles and well-timed interceptions, Rwanda held on to secure a valuable point.
Despite their superior possession and attacking intent, Nigeria left Kigali frustrated with only a draw to show for their efforts. The result leaves the Super Eagles in a competitive position in Group D, but they will need to capitalize on their remaining matches to ensure qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
Rwanda’s resilient performance, especially their strong defensive organization, will provide them with confidence as they continue their qualifying campaign. For Nigeria, the focus now shifts to improving their finishing, as they aim to turn dominance into victories in future games.
