The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has praised the launch of operations at the Dangote Refinery, calling it a landmark achievement that signals a new era for Nigeria’s energy independence and economic development.
In a congratulatory letter to Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, the union’s General Secretary, Labi Olawale, lauded Dangote for his vision, resilience, and exceptional contribution to Nigeria’s energy sector. The letter, released on Wednesday in Abuja, recognized the significance of the refinery and its potential to transform the nation’s energy landscape.
“We are proud of you, Alhaji Aliko Dangote. You are a man with uncommon courage and determination. You have dared to dream and tread where no mortal has ever gone,” Olawale stated. He described the Dangote Refinery as a world-class achievement, noting that the facility is the largest single-train petroleum refinery and petrochemical plant in the world.
The refinery, which recently commenced production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), represents a monumental step toward reducing Nigeria’s dependency on imported fuel. The union commended Dangote for his relentless pursuit of excellence, innovation, and dedication to addressing one of Nigeria’s most critical challenges—energy security.
“This remarkable achievement is a testament to your unwavering commitment, innovation, and excellence in the energy sector,” Olawale continued, praising Dangote’s leadership in a project of such magnitude. “The successful production of PMS at this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone for Dangote Refinery and represents a monumental step forward for Nigeria’s energy independence and economic growth.”
NUPENG emphasized the positive impact the refinery will have on the petroleum and natural gas industry, as well as the broader Nigerian economy. The union expressed its excitement about the employment opportunities, increased economic activities, and the long-term benefits that the refinery will provide to the country.
“As a union dedicated to the welfare and advancement of workers in the petroleum and natural gas industry, NUPENG is excited about the opportunities this development will bring,” Olawale said. “This is in terms of employment for Nigerians, socioeconomic prosperity, and the monumental growth of our country.”
The commencement of operations at the Dangote Refinery is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians across various sectors. Additionally, it is poised to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products, saving the country billions in foreign exchange while boosting local refining capacity. Experts believe this development could eventually lead to lower fuel prices and improved availability of petroleum products domestically.
Furthermore, the refinery is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s industrialization by stimulating the petrochemical sector and providing raw materials for industries that rely on petroleum by-products. With the capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the Dangote Refinery is positioned to become a major player in the global oil market, potentially making Nigeria a key exporter of refined petroleum products.
In his concluding remarks, Olawale reiterated NUPENG’s commitment to supporting the Dangote Refinery in its operations and ensuring that workers in the sector benefit from the opportunities created by the refinery. “We look forward to collaborating with Dangote Refinery to enhance the welfare and development of workers in the industry, while also promoting the socioeconomic advancement of Nigeria.”
