Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been awarded the Professional Footballers’ Association Men’s Player of the Year, while Chelsea winger Cole Palmer has been named Young Player of the Year.
This is the first time since the 2009-2010 season that both of these awards have been won by English players. Back then, Wayne Rooney and James Milner received the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, respectively.
Foden stated, “To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for. To be recognized this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. Last season was another very special one for everyone at the club, but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term.”
Foden scored 19 goals in 35 top-flight appearances in the 2023-24 season, aiding City in winning a historic fourth successive Premier League title. At 23 years old, he became the youngest player to have won six league titles.
This is the first time that the Stockport-born playmaker has been awarded the PFA’s Player of the Year, having previously been recognized twice as the Best Young Player. Additionally, he won the 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season award and was named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year.
Foden was chosen over his Manchester City teammates Erling Haaland and Rodri, as well as Chelsea’s Palmer, Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, who were all shortlisted for the award.
Despite missing out on one award, Palmer received recognition for his high-scoring season.
The 22-year-old scored 22 goals in 34 Premier League appearances in his debut season for Chelsea. His outstanding form led to his selection for the England squad for Euro 2024, where he scored in the final, although the Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain.

Palmer triumphed over Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, former Crystal Palace player Michael Olise, and Brighton’s Joao Pedro to be awarded the Young Player prize.
In the women’s categories, Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw and Manchester United’s Grace Clinton were named Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year, respectively.
