BREAKING: Emeka Anyaoku Calls for New Constitution to Address Nigeria’s Challenges

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, along with other prominent leaders, has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider drafting a new constitution for Nigeria. Anyaoku and his group, operating under the name “The Patriot,” met with President Tinubu on Friday at the State House to advocate for this significant change, which they believe is essential to resolving the country’s ongoing challenges.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after the meeting, Anyaoku emphasized that the current constitution is inadequate for leading Nigeria to prosperity and is a root cause of many of the nation’s social and economic issues. He stressed the need for a new constitution to address these problems effectively.

The group, which included notable figures such as Senator Shehu Sani, Mike Ozekhome, Labaran Maku, Senator Ben Obi, and Segun Osoba, proposed that President Tinubu should swiftly send a presidential bill to the National Assembly. This bill would establish a constituent assembly tasked with drafting a new constitution that reflects Nigeria’s diversity.

They suggested that the draft constitution be subjected to a national referendum to ensure it represents the will of the people and effectively addresses the challenges facing the country. The group expressed confidence that a new constitution could be developed within nine months and could significantly impact Nigeria’s future.

Collapsed Container Truck Causes Severe Traffic on Abuja Airport Road

A collapsed container truck between the FHA Bridge and the ShopRite Pedestrian Bridge along the Lugbe-Airport Road in Abuja has caused a major gridlock on the busy route.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, forcing outbound vehicles heading towards the airport to divert to the opposite lane, worsening congestion on the expressway.

Federal Capital Territory Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Muta’a Chorrie, confirmed the incident, noting that FRSC officers were on-site, working to remove the container and alleviate the traffic jam. He clarified that the obstruction was caused by a fallen container, not a tanker, as some earlier reports had claimed.

“It was just a container that fell on the road. We are making efforts to remove the container and manage the traffic. So, it’s a container that fell on Airport Road today, not a tanker. I haven’t received the full details yet, but when I do, I’ll update you,” Chorrie said.

Engr. Mike Oluwagbemi, Program Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), has provided a comprehensive update on the ongoing developments in Nigeria’s CNG sector and underscored the pressing need for the country to transition away from petrol.

He made this known on Tuesday while appearing as a guest on interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.

He said as of today, Nigeria boasts 123 conversion workshops dedicated to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion. This significant number reflects the country’s growing commitment to adopting alternative energy sources amid the financial strain imposed by petrol subsidies and fluctuations in global oil markets.

Engr. Oluwagbemi highlighted the economic imperative of this transition, stating, “The nation is being bankrupted by petrol; we need to move to gas.” His remarks underscore the urgent need for Nigeria to shift towards more sustainable and economically viable energy solutions.

Over the past seven months, there has been an impressive $75 million investment in the CNG sector. Engr. Oluwagbemi emphasized that these investments are a testament to the sector’s potential and the government’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. “These are significant investments,” he noted, pointing to the growing interest and financial support for CNG initiatives.

The CNG program is not just a standalone project; it represents an interdisciplinary approach that involves various government ministries and agencies. Engr. Oluwagbemi explained that the initiative does not fall solely under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Instead, it requires a collaborative effort, drawing on expertise from multiple sectors to ensure its success. This approach reflects the complexity of transitioning to a new energy source and the need for coordinated efforts across different governmental departments.
