Atiku Commends Peaceful Protesters, Criticizes Tinubu’s Govt

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has praised the Nigerians who took to the streets to protest against the administration of President Bola Tinubu, his main opponent in the last general election. Atiku, who ran against Tinubu and finished as the runner-up, expressed support for the demonstrators while also condemning instances of violence and misconduct during the protests.

In a statement released on Friday, Atiku lauded the courage of the protesters, acknowledging their role in highlighting issues of governance and public dissatisfaction. He emphasized the importance of these demonstrations as a vital channel for citizens to voice their disapproval of government policies, contributing to the broader conversation about governance in Nigeria.

Atiku commended the majority of protesters for their peaceful conduct, noting their admirable restraint and dedication. However, he also addressed the violence that has occurred in some regions, where hoodlums have reportedly hijacked the protests, leading to clashes and brutalities. He urged protesters to maintain their nonviolent stance and called on more Nigerians to support the peaceful #EndBadGovernance movement.

Additionally, Atiku criticized the conduct of security operatives, urging them to exercise greater professionalism and restraint. He condemned the harassment of journalists who are covering the protests and the reckless use of force by security agencies. “The needless killing of innocent citizens by security agencies is unacceptable,” Atiku stated, emphasizing the need for security forces to avoid molesting journalists and to focus on isolating and addressing the minority elements causing violence and looting.

In his remarks to the government, Atiku urged the Tinubu administration to “come down from its high horse” and engage sincerely with the protesters’ demands. He stressed the urgency for the government to address the issues raised by the demonstrations and to act with integrity to prevent further unrest. “The nation cannot afford further days of unrest; let this be the moment where leadership listens and acts with integrity and urgency,” he said.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged Nigerians to remain patient as President Bola Tinubu’s policies take effect, assuring that they are designed to bring long-term progress.

Speaking in Ibadan during a condolence visit to Governor Seyi Makinde, Wike emphasized that Nigeria was in a dire state before Tinubu took office, and the ongoing reforms are necessary for national recovery.

“This country was in a critical condition a few years ago. If we truly want a remedy, we must allow time for the policies of Mr. President to take shape,” Wike said.

He acknowledged the short-term challenges but reassured citizens that the policies will yield the desired results.

“There will be effects, and people will feel them, but in the end, we will achieve the progress we seek. No one should panic because Mr. President means well for the country,” he added.

Wike’s remarks come amid growing public concerns over economic hardships, with the government facing pressure to deliver on promises of economic stability and improved living conditions.

Residents of Jikwoyi and Karu communities on the outskirts of Abuja are calling for the urgent relocation of the Karu dump site, citing severe environmental and health risks.

Appealing to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), the residents warned of a potential epidemic if the site remains in its current location.

They highlighted the growing waste accumulation, which frequently obstructs the Karu-Orozo road, causing persistent traffic congestion.

Gabriel Idoko, a resident, expressed frustration over the situation.

“It’s shameful that such a hazardous site exists in Abuja. This is an eyesore that poses serious health risks,” he lamented.

A local community chief, who spoke anonymously, condemned the site’s proximity to a cemetery.

“How can refuse be dumped on graves? It’s unacceptable. The FCT administration must act swiftly,” he stated.

Residents are urging authorities to address the issue urgently by relocating the dump site to a more suitable location.
