CASCADE Empowers 2,095 Female Smallholder Farmers with Agricultural Support in Bauchi

The Catalysing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets and Resilience in Bauchi State (CASCADE) initiative has provided 1,482 female smallholder farmers in Bauchi State with orange-fleshed potatoes, giving a considerable boost to local agriculture. In addition, 613 other women received a variety of veggies as part of the program’s complete support effort.

Isaac Ishaya, Programme Manager of CASCADE Nigeria’s Bauchi office, announced these developments during the inauguration of the 2024 rain-fed season agricultural input fair and voucher redemption event held in Miri community, Bauchi Local Government Area on Tuesday.

“We are supporting 1,482 women smallholders in Bauchi with orange-fleshed potatoes and 613 other women with assorted vegetables,” Ishaya stated, highlighting the broad reach of the initiative.

The CASCADE initiative spans across multiple local government areas including Bauchi, Dass, Jama’are, Ningi, and Toro. Its primary objective is to empower female farmers by enhancing their agricultural capabilities and ensuring access to essential resources.

“This initiative aims to build confidence among women smallholder farmers. CASCADE Nigeria has engaged private sector actors to strengthen agricultural linkages between the farmers and leading agricultural firms. We also encourage smallholder farmers to participate in sourcing their inputs and aim to bridge the gap between them and their input sources,” Ishaya elaborated.

Helen Ciroma, Head of Women in Agriculture at the State Agricultural Supply Company, emphasized the transformative impact of this support on the women’s livelihoods and nutritional well-being. “The orange-fleshed potatoes are rich in vitamin A, which helps reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, and is beneficial for diabetes management. These potatoes can be planted in sacks at home, with both the leaves used as vegetables and the tubers prepared in dishes like fufu,” Ciroma explained.

Dabis Mwalike, Acting Executive Director of Forward in Action for Education, Poverty, and Malnutrition, underscored the importance of backyard farming for enhancing the nutritional status of women and young children. “The potato vines and vegetable seeds will significantly boost their farming efforts and improve their nutritional values,” Mwalike affirmed.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved the participation of licensed Bureau De Change (BDC), operators in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), allowing each BDC to purchase up to $150,000 weekly.

The approval was contained in a circular dated February 10, 2026, signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Musa Nakorji, and addressed to authorised dealer banks and the general public.

The CBN said the move is aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity in the retail segment of the market and meeting the legitimate needs of end users, amid a widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates.

Under the new arrangement, licensed BDCs can access foreign exchange from the NFEM through any authorised dealer bank of their choice at the prevailing exchange rate.

The apex bank directed banks to carry out full Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and due diligence checks on BDC clients before selling foreign exchange to them.

It also imposed reporting and transparency requirements, mandating BDCs to submit returns electronically to the CBN.

In addition, the bank prohibited third-party transactions and limited cash settlement to a maximum of 25 per cent of each transaction.
