The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Police Inspector Aminu Mohammed, implicated in a series of robberies targeting residences around his duty station at the ‘C’ Division in Lokoja, the state capital.
The officer’s criminal activities came to light on Sunday, culminating in his arrest. The Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, briefed journalists in Lokoja on Tuesday, revealing the details of the case. “Luck ran out for the officer following the activities of a notorious gang of armed robbers who specialize in robbing houses of household items and cars,” Aya stated.
The breakthrough in the investigation occurred when a stolen car was discovered at the workshop of Arome Moses, a panel beater hired by Mohammed. Moses was in the process of changing the car’s color at Ochadamu near Anyigba in the eastern part of the state.
“Those familiar with the vehicle and aware of the robbery incident that occurred at the owner’s house on June 14, 2024, quickly raised the alarm upon sighting the car,” Aya explained. The vehicle’s license plates had been changed to Abuja plates, and Mohammed had produced a backdated car dealer’s receipt from 2020 as supposed proof of purchase.
Aya further detailed the swift response from law enforcement. “After the alarm was raised, the Quick Response Unit attached to the Police Area Command was promptly invited, leading to the apprehension of the panel beater,” he said.
The investigation took a decisive turn when one of the gang members, already on the police’s wanted list for other crimes, confessed to the robbery. He identified Inspector Mohammed as the mastermind behind the operation, revealing that they were contracted specifically to steal the car for him.
