On Thursday, a 35-year-old man, Stephen David, appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna, facing allegations of stealing N600,000 from a parked car. The accused, whose address was not provided, is charged with conspiracy and stealing.
Stephen David pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, informed the court that the offences occurred on July 2 in the Malali area of Kaduna. According to Inspector Leo, the accused conspired with others, who are still at large, to steal the sum from the complainant, Sani Usman.
Mr. Leo explained that the accused and his accomplices followed the complainant from a bank to the location where he parked his car. It was there that they managed to steal the money from the vehicle. However, Stephen David was apprehended with the stolen money, while his accomplices managed to escape.
The charges brought against the accused fall under Sections 217 and 287 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. Section 217 prescribes a four-year jail term for conspiracy to steal, while Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for the act of stealing if found guilty.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum. The surety must be someone with a verifiable address and a reliable source of income.
The case has been adjourned until August 17 for trial.
The incident has raised concerns about security around banking premises and the need for improved surveillance and protective measures for customers withdrawing large sums of money. Banks in Kaduna and other regions are being urged to enhance their security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies continue to search for the accomplices who escaped. The public has been encouraged to provide any information that might lead to their arrest, ensuring that justice is fully served.
In light of this case, legal experts have highlighted the importance of stringent enforcement of penal codes to deter such criminal activities. The judiciary’s role in upholding the law and ensuring that offenders are appropriately penalized is crucial for maintaining public order and safety.
