Oyo Prepares for Coronation of New Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has established a committee to oversee the coronation and presentation of the staff of office to the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. The announcement marks a significant step in the traditional leadership transition in Ibadan.

The committee, headed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Ademola Ojo, includes key members of the state cabinet and notable figures in the community. Among them are the Information Commissioner, Prince Dotun Oyelade; the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun; the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Toyin Balogun; and the son of the incoming Olubadan, Prince Folaseke Owolabi Olakulehin.

Other prominent committee members include Chief Onikepo Akande, His Royal Majesty Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, His Royal Majesty Oba Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe, Chief Hazeem Gbolarumi, Mr. Toye Arulogun, Bishop Ademola Moradeyo, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd), Mogaji Abduljeleel Adanla, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ramota Agberemi-Dabo.

Governor Makinde approved the nomination of Oba Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the recommendation of the Olubadan-In-Council. The coronation ceremony is scheduled for July 12, 2024, and is expected to be a grand event that will draw dignitaries from across the country.

The establishment of this committee underscores the significance of the Olubadan’s role in preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of Ibadan. The new Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, is set to take on this esteemed position, continuing the legacy of his predecessors while bringing his vision to the throne.

The coronation is anticipated to be a momentous occasion, highlighting the rich history and cultural significance of Ibadanland. It will also serve as an opportunity to strengthen community bonds and promote the values of unity and progress that the Olubadan institution represents.

LAWMA Cracks Down on Illegal Recycling, Scavenging

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned against illegal recycling and scavenging in unlicensed facilities, citing environmental and legal violations.

Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin emphasized that such activities breach the Lagos State Environmental Management

Law (2017) and will attract strict penalties. He urged residents to use only registered waste collectors and report violators.

As part of enforcement efforts, LAWMA dislodged illegal recyclers at Ijora-Olopa underbridge, with similar crackdowns planned across Lagos.

Property owners permitting unauthorized recycling risk legal action, including revocation of property rights.

New Alaafin to Begin 21-Day Traditional Rites

Oba Abimbola Owoade, the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, will commence a 21-day traditional ceremony marking his ascension to the throne.

Governor Seyi Makinde officially presented him with the staff of office on Monday, following his announcement as the new monarch on Friday.
Oba Owoade succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away three years ago. The ceremony was attended by the Oyomesi (kingmakers), government officials, and other dignitaries.
After the event, a source confirmed that the new Alaafin has traveled to Oyo town to begin his traditional rites, which are essential for his coronation.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially installed Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, presenting him with the staff and certificate of office.

The ceremony, held on Monday at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, government officials, and Oyo residents.

Governor Makinde hailed Oba Owoade as a custodian of Oyo’s rich cultural heritage, expressing confidence in his ability to lead with wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to unity.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade pledged to prioritize the kingdom’s development and the welfare of its people.

He succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who ruled for 50 years.
