The Lagos State Government (LASG) has finalized plans to create a dedicated Aviation Unit within the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation. This initiative is a key component of the newly unveiled Lagos State Transport Policy, aimed at enhancing oversight and involvement in the aviation sector within the state.
As detailed in Section 4.11: Air Transport of the policy, this move is essential given Lagos State’s status as the primary aviation hub in West Africa and a significant hub in Africa. The policy underscores the need to meet the expectations of all stakeholders in Lagos’s aviation sector.
“There shall be established within the MOT an Aviation Unit,” the policy states, emphasizing the increasing role of the state in aviation matters.
The forthcoming Aviation Unit will focus on implementing aviation-related policies, fostering collaboration with the federal government and private sector, and monitoring the impact of aviation activities on Lagos State’s economic, social, and environmental development. According to the policy, this unit will be established within the next two years.
In addition to the establishment of the Aviation Unit, Section 4.11 of the policy outlines plans for the proposed international Lekki Airport. The Lagos State Government plans to partner with the private sector to develop this airport, which is crucial for supporting the rapidly growing Lekki Peninsula area. This region is experiencing significant residential, industrial, and tourism development along the Lekki, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe corridor.
The new airport is expected to offer greater convenience to international travelers from hinterland areas such as the eastern parts of Ogun State, and Ondo and Edo States, who might find it more accessible than the existing international airport in Ikeja.
The Lagos State Government aims to promote private sector participation in financing, constructing, and operating the Lekki Airport within the next two years, as outlined in the transport policy.
