The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is advocating for a swift resolution to the ongoing strike initiated by a faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Abuja. In a recent statement, NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, emphasized the urgency of ending the strike, highlighting its adverse effects on students and the educational system as a whole.
Emonefe expressed concern over ASUU’s apparent disregard for the interests and challenges faced by Nigerian students and their parents before resorting to strike actions. He urged the striking lecturers to reconsider their stance and return to work immediately, emphasizing the need for dialogue and constructive engagement to resolve grievances.
Furthermore, the NANS president commended the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) and the Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics (CONUA) for rejecting the strike. Their refusal to participate underscores the importance of seeking alternative avenues for addressing issues without disrupting academic activities.
Emonefe reiterated NANS’ readiness to support the federal government and the University of Abuja management in implementing effective measures to bring an end to the strike. He emphasized that the era of indiscriminate strikes, which only serve to disrupt and undermine the education system, must come to an end.
In conclusion, NANS stands firm in its stance against the detrimental impact of strikes on students, parents, and the education sector. The organization urges all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and cooperation in resolving grievances, thereby fostering a conducive learning environment for all.
