Neglected ‘El-Rufai Buses’ Mirror Abuja Urban Mass Transit Company’s Struggles Amid Commuters’ Woes

Published

on

The primary rationale behind the establishment of the Abuja Urban Mass Transit Company (AUMTCO) has since lost its place with the abandonment of the outfit that once catered to the growing transit needs of commuters within and around Abuja city center. This can be largely blamed on neglect and leadership ineptitude by successive governments.

The scheme was established by the then Ministry of Federal Capital Territory, now the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in 1984 as Abuja Bus Service (ABS), and later registered as Abuja Urban Mass Transit Company Limited under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990. It was, among other things, designed to provide “the best value for money and the safest, most reliable rescheduled and bus hire services in Nigeria.” It was also intended to plan, develop, implement, and organize an environmentally friendly and sustainable urban public transport system in the FCT for effective, comfortable, safe, regular, efficient, and affordable transport service delivery.

Left to rot and languish in decay, the scheme has given private vehicle owners the impetus to latch onto the opportunity to milk commuters in dire need of day-to-day transport services to reach their various destinations, cutting across Mararaba, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Bwari, and Kubwa, respectively.

Although the Obasanjo regime (1999-2007), through the FCT Minister Nasir El Rufai, gave the scheme a fresh start, it is little wonder why it is fondly referred to as “El Rufai Buses.” But with the passage of time, the scheme became moribund, showing signs of steady decline from the initial number of over 500.

The current wave of subsidy removal and the attendant fuel hike and scarcity has added to the pangs of transportation woes for commuters within the FCT and its environs, with many Nigerians calling on the government to revamp the transport scheme, thereby cushioning the high cost of fares within the metropolis.

Gunmen Invade Abuja Community, Kidnap Four, Injure Others

Published

Residents of Dawaki, DeiDei, a community along the Zuba, Suleja road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, were thrown into confusion and fear when gunmen invaded the area between 10pm and 10:40 pm on Sunday. The attack resulted in the kidnapping of four people and left many others injured.

An eyewitness, Moses Chukwuma, told our correspondent that the suspected bandits launched their operation from the Rufaida area in Dawaki, moving towards a popular filling station known as ‘Buy Filling Station’ and down to Hasmos School. He said the incursion sparked a serious gun battle between the vigilantes and the bandits, culminating in the abduction of four individuals.

“We did our best to alert the necessary security forces, but all efforts could not prevent the kidnappings,” Chukwuma stated.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity while recounting hearing intense gunfire, said she was too frightened to leave her home. She noted that the gun battle lasted for nearly 30 minutes.

Another resident, Bala Usman, confirmed the incident and appealed to the government to enhance security measures to protect the lives and property of residents of the community. He urged his fellow residents to maintain communication with security authorities when necessary, adding that constant patrols by security operatives, especially the police, are highly recommended to forestall further attacks.

All efforts to get the reaction of the FCT police command were futile, as calls and messages put across to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, were not responded to. Residents of the area are still in fear over the sad incident.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned a nine-day timeline, termed “FCT Week,” dedicated to the inauguration of completed projects in Abuja. This event will commence on May 27, 2024.

During a final inspection of several ongoing projects on Friday, Wike revealed that the inauguration activities would kick off with the launch of the commercial operation of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit system. This marks a significant milestone in the capital’s transportation infrastructure, aimed at enhancing urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion.

In addition to the rail system, other critical projects slated for inauguration include the official residence of the Vice President, a notable development that underscores the government’s commitment to providing top-tier facilities for its leaders. Also on the agenda is the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX), which extends from the Villa Roundabout to Ring Road 1, featuring four interchanges designed to improve traffic flow and connectivity within the city. Another significant infrastructure, the B6 and B12 Circle Road, will also be inaugurated, further expanding the city’s road network and easing transportation.

Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of the projects, praising the contractors for adhering to the project timelines. He highlighted the FCT Administration’s role in ensuring timely project completion through consistent funding and support.

“By the approval of Mr. President, we believe that from the 27th of this month, we shall start the inauguration of the various projects,” Wike stated. “Particularly on the 27th, we believe the President will flag off the commercial operation of the Abuja Metro line. We believe on Monday, we will do the final inspection of that. From what we have seen, I think we are good to go.”

Press Council Secretary Laments Lack of Funding

Published

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) Dr. Dili Ezughah, has described the removal of the agency from the national  budget as a huge setback.

Ezughah stated this  when the House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, paid an oversight visit to the council headquarters in Abuja.

He lamented that the development had brought untold hardship to the staff of the agency, with many of them withdrawing their children and wards from school due to inability to pay school fees, while expressing appreciation to the committee members for their efforts to salvage the situation, reiterating  the urgent need for a correction of  what he described as  misclassification.

He said NPC was wrongly classified as a professional body, when it was actually a regulatory agency.

Ezughah briefed the committee on the reform taking place in the council, especially the recent creation of a marketing department to boost internal revenue generation, as well as a fact – checking app in the works. He explained that the app, when developed, would check misinformation and disinformation on the social media.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, Hon. Fatoba Olusola, pledged the commitment of the committee to ensuring the reinstatement of the NPC to the budget.

Hon. Fatoba said the committee would do everything possible to empower the council to effectively perform its statutory functions.

He also assured that the enabling legislation would be revisited to see the areas that could be amended for an optimum performance of the agency.

The Nigerian Press Council, alongside all the professional associations, was removed from the 2024 Appropriation Act.
