Shell PLC has made significant strides in pipeline survey technology by conducting the first-ever pipeline route survey in Nigeria using an unmanned surface vessel (USV).
In February, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd. (SPDC), a subsidiary of Shell, deployed the USV along the Bonny oil pipeline network in the Niger Delta region. The vessel operated continuously for 166 hours, marking both a pioneering achievement and the longest single mission of its kind within the Shell Group.
According to SPDC’s head of offshore survey operations, Steve Keedwell, the introduction of the USV has revolutionized survey operations in Nigeria. Not only does it enhance survey efficiency and data quality, but it also significantly reduces personnel exposure to safety risks. Keedwell emphasized that the deployment of the USV led to increased productivity and superior data acquisition during the survey at Bonny.
Moreover, Shell highlighted the environmental benefits of utilizing the USV, as it resulted in a 97% reduction in CO2 emissions due to its diesel-electric design.
Compass Survey Ltd., a local company, oversaw the deployment of the USV in collaboration with the United Kingdom partner Unmanned Survey Solutions Ltd. The success of the innovative survey at Bonny has garnered attention from the oil and gas industry, positioning it for broader adoption across Nigeria.
Lanre Olawuyi, SPDC’s general manager for Nigerian content development, affirmed Shell’s commitment to supporting Nigerian companies in technology adoption and innovation.
In addition to technological advancements in survey operations, SPDC recently resumed crude oil supply to the Port Harcourt refinery through the Bonny pipeline system. This resumption follows a prolonged outage of over five years, during which the refinery underwent rehabilitation and integrity activities on its supply pipeline.
Odita Nnajiofor, the terminal’s installation manager, hailed the recommencement of crude oil supply as a significant achievement and game-changer for the industry and the country. The steady supply of petroleum products to the downstream market aligns with the federal government’s aspirations and holds economic benefits for the nation.
With its commitment to innovation and operational excellence, Shell continues to drive advancements in technology and contribute to the sustainable development of Nigeria’s energy sector.
