The University of Ilorin has taken decisive action by expelling Mr. Mathew Adeboye Balogun, a Master’s student in the Department of Councilor Education within the Faculty of Education. The expulsion comes in the wake of serious allegations of sexual molestation levied against Mr. Balogun, who was found guilty of victimizing vulnerable students and admission seekers at the university.
The University’s Student Affairs Unit issued a letter of notification regarding the expulsion, referencing Reference number UIL/SAU/SAO/2024/01. The document, titled “Re: Allegation of Misconduct against Balogun, Mathew Adeboye,” bears the date Wednesday, January 3, 2024, and is signed by the Deputy Registrar of Student Affairs, Mr. Moses Opaleke. A copy of this letter has been made available to the media.
The letter explicitly states, “Kindly recall that the social media was set agog with the report of sexual molestation by Balogun, Matthew Adeboye Matriculation number 14/25OD062 (aka Plato).” It further highlights that Mr. Balogun was summoned to appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee on October 16, 2023, a summons which he did not honor.
At the subsequent session on October 19, 2023, Mr. Balogun attended and admitted to the allegations against him. Specifically, he confessed to misconducting himself by taking unlawful and undue advantage of vulnerable students and admission seekers. His actions involved sexually molesting them under the false pretense that he could influence their academic results or secure admission into the university.
The expulsion is in accordance with the violation of specific clauses outlined in the Students’ Information and Regulations Handbook, including Clause 3(a) viii, 3(b), and 4(k).
