Stuttgart had an important victory with 2-0 at home to eliminate Borussia Dortmund, while third-tier Saarbruecken, who previously caused a stir by defeating Bayern Munich, knocked out Eintracht Frankfurt.
Dortmund, who had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Stuttgart at the same venue in November, were outperformed by the dominant home side. Stuttgart secured their victory with second-half goals from Serhou Guirassy and Silas In the German Cup last 16 on Wednesday,.
Guirassy has now scored 18 goals in 13 games across all competitions this season.
Following Guirassy’s goal, English teenager Jamie Bynoe-Gittens found the net for Dortmund, but the effort was disallowed by VAR for offside.
As Dortmund pushed for an equalizer, Stuttgart’s striker Silas capitalized on some lax defending to score a second goal, cementing his team’s progress to the quarter-finals.
Having been eliminated in the last 16 in five of the past seven years, Dortmund, the winners in 2021, faced another disappointing exit.
Shortly after Stuttgart’s victory, Frankfurt, five-time German Cup winners, were also knocked out by Saarbruecken, conceding second-half goals to Kai Bruenker and Luca Kerber.
A “mega proud” Saarbruecken coach Ruediger Ziehl expressed, “that’s just crazy,” while Bruenker, speaking to Sky Germany, said, “tonight I’ll enjoy a beer and we’ll celebrate like beasts.”
Frankfurt debutant Noel Futkeu was sent off late on for lashing out at defender Marcel Gaus just six minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Eleventh in the third division, Saarbruecken defeated Bayern 2-1 at home in the second round last month.
They advance to the quarter-finals alongside Bayer Leverkusen, who triumphed 3-1 at home over second-tier Paderborn. Despite having two goals disallowed for offside, Leverkusen easily overcame Paderborn, thanks to strikes from Victor Boniface, Exequiel Palacios, and Patrik Schick. Sebastian Klaas scored a late consolation goal for the visitors.
Fortuna Duesseldorf, Borussia Moenchengladbach, St Pauli, and Kaiserslautern all secured their spots in the last eight on Tuesday.
Stuttgart have qualified to the next round as it progresses the chances of winning the DFB-Pokal which is a German knockout football cup competition held annually by the German Football Association.
