During a press conference in Abuja, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) asserted that the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) is actively working to transform Nigeria into a one-party state. The NNPP claims that such endeavors by the APC represent a danger to the nation’s multi-party democratic system and is calling on Nigerians to oppose this development.
The Acting National Chairman of NNPP, Abba Kawu Ali, stated that the party is prepared to take legal action to restore what they believe is the rightful mandate of the people of Kano State. The NNPP asserts that Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf was duly elected as the governor of Kano State, and any claim suggesting otherwise is baseless.
Ali expressed disbelief at the Appeal Court’s decision to focus on the issue of membership rather than the merit of NNPP’s appeal. He emphasized that the membership of the candidate is a non-issue, as the nomination system is designed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that only registered members can be nominated.
The NNPP called on the international community to support Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and prevent the APC from consolidating power to establish a one-party state. Abba Kawu Ali emphasized that the party has already briefed its lawyers to appeal the perceived injustice at the Supreme Court.
In addressing the situation in Kano State, Ali raised concerns about the political desperation of APC leaders who were allegedly rejected at the polls and are now attempting to gain power through legal channels. The NNPP sees the Kano situation as a critical test for the survival of democracy in Nigeria and the credibility of the judicial system.
Meanwhile, Dipo Olayoku, the National Secretary of NNPP, shed light on the internal challenges the party faced after the recent presidential election. Olayoku acknowledged that as a party grows, internal contentions are inevitable. He revealed that some state chairmen engaged in anti-party activities, endorsing candidates from other parties, leading to their expulsion.
Olayoku dismissed the notion of a faction within NNPP and explained that the party is focusing on preparing for the 2027 general election with improved strategies. He refuted claims that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NNPP and the National Movement group had expired, emphasizing that the agreement has no set timeline.
Regarding the resignation of the former National Chairman, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, Olayoku viewed it as a positive move for the party, allowing younger members to play a more active role. He expressed concerns about external influences causing turmoil within NNPP but urged supporters to remain calm.
Addressing the issue of the party’s logo, Olayoku explained that it did not carry the party’s name on the ballot papers during the last general election, affecting their chances. He assured supporters that steps were being taken to rectify the logo issue.
Finally, Olayoku confirmed that Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso remains a registered member of NNPP and is gearing up for the 2027 general elections. He concluded by urging NNPP supporters to remain calm and resist provocations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a multi-party system in Nigeria.
