The Federal Government has announced plans to release 4,068 detainees, largely targeting impoverished persons unable to pay penalties, in an effort to relieve congestion in the country’s correctional facilities. At a flag-off ceremony in Abuja, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, announced this initiative and emphasised how it would promote reformation and rehabilitation.

A significant step in this endeavor is the allocation of N585 million by the Federal Government, sourced from corporate bodies and philanthropists, specifically earmarked for settling fines and facilitating the release of the identified inmates nationwide. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of decongesting custodial centers to pave the way for effective rehabilitation efforts.

During the ceremony, the minister underscored that the initiative is aimed at inmates with fines and compensation not exceeding N1 million. This strategic approach aligns with the government’s commitment to international human rights standards and effective correctional practices, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for transformative reforms.

Commending the Nigerian Correctional Service for their dedication to humane custody and national security, Tunji-Ojo expressed the Ministry of Interior’s intent to collaborate with the Ministry of Justice.

Jigawa Government Laments Rising Kidney Disease Cases

Jigawa State Government has raised an alarm over the growing cases of kidney disease, largely linked to rising diabetes and hypertension rates.

The concern was expressed by the State Commissioner for Health, Abdullahi Kainuwa, during the Annual Physician Week organized by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Hadejia town.

Kainuwa highlighted how the increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension is contributing to chronic kidney disease in the region.

“The incidences of diabetes and hypertension are skyrocketing, and everybody knows the contribution of diabetes and hypertension to chronic kidney disease,” he noted.

He provided statistics showing the strain on state hospitals, with 147,924 visits for hypertension and 94,000 for diabetes recorded in 2023. Additionally, there were about 9,448 visits for sickle cell disease treatment.

In response to the escalating health challenge, the Jigawa State Government is set to implement several initiatives aimed at making critical care more accessible to residents.

Kainuwa announced that by March next year, dialysis will be provided free of charge for all kidney patients from Jigawa.

“We are building free Kidney Dialysis centres at the headquarters of the five emirate councils of the state — Dutse, Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim, and Gumel — by March next year,” he said.

Further, from January, the state government plans to offer free treatment for diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease across state-owned health facilities.

These efforts underscore Jigawa’s commitment to tackling kidney disease and improving health outcomes for its residents.

Abuja: Avoid Roadside Transport, AMAC Chairman Warns Resident

Published

Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has advised residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to avoid using roadside transport operators, emphasizing that this shift could help reduce “one-chance” incidents—a term used for robberies or abductions that occur in vehicles posing as public transport.

Maikalangu offered this guidance on Wednesday while inaugurating the new Karu Motor Park in Abuja.

The newly opened motor park features 136 parking spaces, along with facilities like toilets, restaurants, and shops.

Maikalangu explained that the park is designed to accommodate both intra-city and inter-state transport, providing residents with a safer, more organized alternative to roadside vehicles.

“This park will serve for economic purposes and for security. It is one of the biggest parks owned by the council, and it will serve as travel points for all commuters within the Jikwoyi axis and its environs,” he noted, adding that the park will help curb criminal activities while attracting patrons from within and outside Abuja.

Maikalangu also announced plans to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and ensure a steady presence of security personnel to protect park users.

Furthermore, he shared that he and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike have agreed to establish similar facilities across Abuja to further minimize criminal activity.

“I want to advise the residents going out of Abuja to their different states or even within the city to go to the parks and stop using motorists outside,” Maikalangu stated, stressing the importance of choosing safe and regulated transport options as the yuletide season approaches.
