Former Barcelona and Brazil defender, Dani Alves, is set to face trial on a rape charge after a judge approved the case on Tuesday. The 40-year-old football icon was accused of rape in January for an incident alleged to have occurred on December 30, 2022, in Barcelona, Spain.
Alves has been in police custody since January, as the Barcelona court denied him bail. The presiding judge has given Alves’ defense attorneys five days to assemble their arguments for the upcoming trial. During this time, they must convince the judge why Alves should be convicted or acquitted and suggest an appropriate penalty. Following this process, a trial date for Alves will be determined.
If charged, Alves could face imprisonment for up to 12 years, contingent on the severity of the court proceedings. Additionally, the jury could impose a fine of up to €150,000 based on the court’s ruling.
Throughout the period since the accusation, Alves has maintained his innocence. However, the case has been complicated by the presentation of four different versions of events by the footballer.
Once considered the most decorated footballer of all time with 43 titles, Alves’ record was surpassed by Lionel Messi when he won the Leagues Cup with Inter Miami. Alves boasts an illustrious career, winning FIFA Confederations Cups and two Copa America titles with the Brazilian national team. He played for renowned clubs such as Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Sevilla, Sao Paulo, and Bahia. The 2019 Copa America Golden Ball winner also secured the UEFA Champions League three times during his stint with Barcelona.
As legal proceedings unfold, the case against Dani Alves adds a significant chapter to his life and career, drawing attention to both the legal and personal dimensions of the accusations. The upcoming trial will undoubtedly be closely watched, given Alves’ status as a football icon and the seriousness of the charges leveled against him.
