Barely 84 days after he assumed power, President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet took off yesterday, with the president asking his 45 ministers to serve the country with “integrity, dignity and deliver” in their different assignments, instead of serving their states and regions.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the 45 ministers at the State House Conference Centre (Old Banquet Hall), Abuja, Tinubu said the country is currently battling “daunting” challenges, adding that the ministers must implement “long overdue” reforms and restore the citizenry’s belief in government.

Tinubu said the assignment before the ministers begins immediately and that they must meet the expectations of Nigerians.

He told the new cabinet members that they were ministers of the country and not ministers of a region or state.

The President said: “I expect that you will serve with integrity, dignity and deliver. I will hold you to that standard we all promised Nigerians. Your assignment begins immediately.

As your country honours you today, by this call to service, you must each work to make yourself worthy in the eyes of God and all our nation’s peoples.

“Your highest obligation is to return public faith in government so that our people can once again believe what the right hands in government can show.

“I believe in you that the government can be a positive force for transformation and a vehicle for collective progress of this country.

“I wish you success in this new assignment. We are on this boat, even if it is a vehicle and I am the driver. The entire Nigerians are behind sitting and watching as you and I navigate this vehicle.

“We must hold each other responsible. We have to do the job to meet the expectations of all Nigerians.”

Present at the ceremony that started by 10 am were Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House Representatives, Tajudeen Abass; Senator George Akume; Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Kwara State Governor, Abdularasaq Abdulrahman

The All Progressives Congress (APC), in Lagos State has defended the Federal Government’s $1 billion investment in Lagos ports, describing it as part of a national maritime modernisation plan, not a regional project.

APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo said this on Tuesday while responding to opposition claims that President Bola Tinubu was favouring Lagos over other ports in Warri, Calabar, Onne, and Port Harcourt.

Oladejo said the investment, backed by China Harbour Engineering Company and Tolaram Group, is aimed at making Nigeria West Africa’s leading maritime hub.

He noted that the government is also upgrading other ports, including dredging Calabar Port, rehabilitating Port Harcourt Port, expanding Warri Port, and digitalising Onne Port.

He said the Lagos investment will create jobs, boost exports, and reduce inefficiencies in port operations.

“The only sabotage here,” Oladejo added, “is the opposition’s attempt to weaponise regional sentiments against national progress.”

Cameroon’s 92-year-old President, Paul Biya, has been declared winner of the 2025 presidential election, extending his over four-decade rule.

The Constitutional Council announced on Monday that Biya secured 53.66% of the votes, defeating Issa Tchiroma, who got 35.19%. The election was held on October 12.

With this victory, Biya will continue in office for another seven years, ruling the Central African nation until 2032. He remains the world’s oldest serving head of state.

Although Tchiroma enjoyed strong backing from Cameroonian voters abroad, Biya’s dominance at home gave him the edge. Tchiroma won 62.79% of votes in Europe, 66.75% in the Americas, and 68.21% in Asia and the Middle East. He also led across Africa’s diaspora with 54.99%, but more than half of eligible overseas voters abstained.

The Constitutional Council clarified that the overall national votes determine the winner, not diaspora results.

Biya’s re-election comes amid renewed calls for political change, as critics accuse his party of suppressing opposition and manipulating elections. The government, however, insists the poll was “free and fair.”

If he completes this term, Biya will remain in power until age 99.

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has threatened legal action against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after being denied access to purchase the nomination form for the National Chairmanship ahead of the party’s convention in Ibadan on November 15–16.

Lamido, who arrived at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja on Monday, described the situation as “weird” after finding offices locked and officials unavailable. He accused party leaders of sidelining the National Executive Committee (NEC) and violating internal democracy.

“If I don’t get the form, I’ll go to court,” he warned.

Lamido rejected the reported consensus backing Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as Northern candidate, insisting his North-West zone was not consulted. He said his push is for discipline, inclusion, and fairness within the PDP ahead of 2027.
